While sociologists and psychologists have known that having a close relationship improves one?s health and happiness, the biological underpinnings that influence these health effects has been obscure.

Learning how relationships provide protective health benefits has been accentuated with new findings that show dramatic benefits of being in a relationship for health issues ranging from pregnancy and birth defects to cancer and chronic disease.

?We know that having relationships in general and being socially integrated is associated with a reduced risk of mortality,? said psychologist Dr. Paula Pietromonaco of the University of Massachusetts.

?Our research follows from attachment theory, which suggests that there is one primary person that people turn to for comfort when they are distressed or frightened.? In adulthood, that person is often a romantic partner or spouse, she says.

?These sorts of relationship partners are especially important when people are faced with a stressful event because they have the potential to comfort and calm the person who is experiencing distress or to hinder that person?s efforts to feel better.?

In an ongoing longitudinal study of 225 newlywed couples, Pietromonaco?s team is finding that the way people feel attached to each other affects cortisol levels in response to stress ? and can possibly predict depression or anxiety over time.

That is, our emotional quotient, as associated with being in a relationship, can influence future mental health challenges.

Researchers say preliminary findings show that when a wife is more anxiously attached ? that is, someone who desires a great deal of intimacy and seeks reassurance and support ? and a husband who is more ?avoidantly attached,? cortisol levels spike in anticipation of a conflict discussion followed by a sharp decline in cortisol.

?In addition, these same anxious wife/avoidant husband couples appear to have more difficulty in discussing the conflict, and their behavior suggests greater disengagement from the discussion.?

Pietromonaco believes the patterns may signal difficulty with emotion regulation, and it is possible that individuals in these couples will be at greater risk for symptoms of depression and anxiety over time.

In the study, researchers are following the couples over the first 3 to 4 years of marriage, and will be examining the extent to which the patterns they see now predict changes in emotional health over the early years of marriage.

Upon a review of studies that addressed the effects of two-person relationships on a range of health topics Pietromonaco discovered several instances in which greater prenatal social support predicts more optimal fetal growth, higher infant birth weight, and reduced risk of low birth weight.

How, the researchers caution that such studies need to be replicated and expanded to take into account both perceived support as well as actual support interactions among both partners.

Researchers say the emerging field of relationship science will explore in what way the expectations, beliefs, and experiences of both partners can predict emotional and physical health.

?Although research on psychology and health has begun to consider these sorts of ?partner effects,? they are often not incorporated into studies designed to intervene to help people cope with chronic diseases such as cancer or diabetes,? said Pietromonaco.

?As Lynn Martire [Penn State] and her colleagues have noted, many couple intervention studies include both partners but assess psychological adjustment for the patient only.

?Yet how the patient?s caregiver, who is often a spouse, is adjusting and coping may be very important in predicting how patients themselves cope.?

Romanian court delays decision on impeachment

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) ? Romania's Constitutional Court said Thursday that it is delaying until September a decision on the validity of a referendum on impeaching the president, a move that will prolong the country's political crisis.

The court's decision to postpone a decision on President Traian Basescu's impeachment until Sept. 12 is the latest move in a bitter power struggle between a left-wing government and the populist center-right president. The conflict has sparked concerns about democracy in the young European Union member and Thursday's announcement sent the currency, the leu, to an all-time low.

Romanians voted in a referendum on Sunday on whether to impeach President Traian Basescu, who is widely disliked for austerity measures and getting more involved in the judicial system than his mandate as president allows. Though 88 percent voted to oust him, officials at first indicated the referendum would be invalidated because voter turnout did not reach a required 50 percent.

But the government of Prime Minister Victor Ponta, which has been trying to remove Basescu from office, now suggests the 50 percent threshold might actually have been met. It says the electorate is actually much smaller than official statistics show, citing preliminary data from a 2011 census indicating the population has shrunk to about 19 million from 22 million in the past decade due to a low birth rate and emigration.

The implication made by the government is that if the population is 19 million, voter turnout would likely have reached 50 percent, meaning Basescu should be impeached.

There was no immediate reaction to the court's delay from Basescu, who was suspended by parliament ahead of the impeachment referendum on allegations he committed "serious violations" of the constitution.

Basescu, a charismatic and sometimes confrontational figure, saw his political fortunes decline when his political foe Victor Ponta became the prime minister on May 7 and then pushed for impeachment.

The European Union has criticized Ponta's attempt to drive Basescu from power, saying the methods he has used are not fully democratic.

The ruling coalition repeated its calls for Basescu to resign to end the political crisis and praised the court's decision.

"Romania is a real democratic country, a country where there is the rule of law, where people can think with optimism and hope about the future," Interim President Crin Antonescu, also a rival of Basescu's, said in reaction to the court's decision to delay its ruling.

Unfortunately, I know what it?s like to be very unhealthy. I battled anorexia from age 16-20 and have seen myself weak and malnourished. Now that I?m recovered, I want to make sure my body is as healthy and strong as it can be.

I?m a big believer in balance. During my eating disorder I rarely let myself have fun. Now, I make sure to hang out with friends, try new restaurants, and allow myself to be lazy. Pedicures are my indulgence, and a night with girlfriends and a bottle of wine sounds perfect.

4. What is your regular fitness routine?

I try to change it up and am always finding new things I love. Last year I trained for a marathon and adored Bikram Yoga, but right now I?m really into CrossFit. I try to go to CrossFit around 4 times a week, leaving time for a few mid-length runs, spinning classes, and yoga.

5. What advice do you have for someone at the beginning of their fitness journey?

Everyone starts somewhere, so don?t be discouraged or embarrassed! Find an activity you like and start small. There?s no need to run for hours or do yoga every day, just find what works for you and know that you?re doing something great for your body.

Obama ahead in three key U.S. states, poll shows

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama has the edge over Mitt Romney in three key battleground states in large part because voters find him more likable than the Republican challenger, a poll released on Wednesday found.

Quinnipiac University's survey of more than 3,500 likely voters in the November 6 U.S. election found Obama ahead by 11 percentage points in Pennsylvania (53 to 42 percent), and 6 percentage points in both Ohio (50 to 44 percent) and Florida (51 to 45 percent). Obama won all three states in the 2008 presidential election.

At least 50 percent of respondents in the three states expressed a "favorable" opinion of Obama compared to about 40 percent for Romney, according to the poll, which has a margin of error of about plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

The Obama campaign has tried to portray Romney, one of the richest men ever to seek the presidency, as out-of-touch with ordinary Americans.

Various polls show a tight race nationwide between the Democratic president and Romney as the U.S. economy struggles and unemployment remains high. A Reuters/Ipsos poll last month found Obama's standing among U.S. voters improving amid slightly more optimism about the future.

"The president is running better in the key swing states than he is nationally," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, who added that no U.S. president has won the White House without winning at least two of the three states since 1960.

"Part of the reason may be that the unemployment rate in Ohio is well below the national average. In Florida, it has been dropping over the past year, while nationally that has not been the case," Brown said in a statement.

Despite concerns over U.S. economic problems, just over a third of voters in the three states said both Romney and Obama's economic policies would make no difference to their personal financial situation.

They were also split over whether either candidate's policies would help or hurt their pocketbooks, according to the poll, conducted between July 24 and July 30 in conjunction with the New York Times and CBS News.

"All this matters because half of all likely voters say the economy is the most important issue to their vote, far ahead of any other issue. The saving grace for Governor Mitt Romney is that he roughly breaks even with the president on who is best on the economy," Brown said.

More than half of those polled said presidential candidates should release "several years" of their tax returns. The Obama campaign has called on Romney to release more years of his personal tax records.

Romney has released his 2010 returns and estimates for 2011 but has been reluctant to release more.

Overall, 4 percent of voters in all three states said they were still undecided in the race. In addition, a chunk of voters who did express a preference for one of the candidates said they could still change their mind before Election Day: 10 percent in Florida; 12 percent in Ohio; and 12 percent in Pennsylvania.

Some voters in all three states also said they still had not heard enough about Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and private equity executive: 14 percent in Florida; 15 percent in Ohio; and 11 percent in Pennsylvania.

Only 2 percent in each state said they had not heard enough about Obama.
