Three New Jersey police officers are in the hospital after being shot inside a police station by a man being processed for a domestic incident. MSNBC's Thomas Roberts reports.

The gunman who shot three officers after a "violent struggle" at a New Jersey police station early Friday is dead, officials said.
The suspected shooter had been brought into Gloucester Township Police station?for a domestic incident when he got into a confrontation with officers, reported?NBC's Philadelphia affiliate, NBC 10.
"A violent struggle occurred while the suspect was being processed," Deputy Chief David Harkins said. The man was able to grab a gun and then opened fire.
One of the injured officers, who was rushed to surgery after being shot below his bulletproof vest, is listed in stable condition. The other two were treated for graze wounds and released.?
The shooter was killed by police during the confrontation, according to Chief W. Harry Earle.?The investigation was ongoing.?
Gloucester is located in central New Jersey, about 15 miles outside Philadelphia.

A video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfil his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives.
Wreck-It Ralph (Reilly) is the bad guy in an old school 8-bit video arcade game called Fix-It Felix Junior. The premise of the game is straightforward; there is an apartment complex filled with ?Nicelanders? who are terrorised whenever Ralph wrecks the building, however Fix-It Felix (McBrayer) and his magic hammer soon reconstruct it.
Although Ralph and the other characters are only playing roles and the game is their ?day-job?, somehow he can?t find acceptance from the apartment dwellers. He goes to a support group for video game villains to help him deal with his feelings. When Fix-It Felix and Wreck-It Ralph have their joint birthday (the game turns 30), the fact he continues to be shunned by the other characters in the game, causes Ralph to leave and look for somewhere he can be a hero.
All the games are situated in Litwak?s Arcade. This is a world that has a Grand Central Station where the commuting characters converge. There are rules and checks to prevent characters from simply entering other games, but Ralph manages to sneak into a first-person shooter and a kart-racing game. While traversing these new games, he inadvertently creates a problem that could bring about a permanent end to all the games in the arcade. Ralph has to find a way to undo the damage he?s done.
Director Rich Moore?s WRECK-IT RALPH is an attempt to create an animated feature that is the gaming equivalent of a TOY STORY.? Old School gamers will enjoy the many appearances of characters like Q-bert and the Street Fighter franchise. In this way, the movie is also reminiscent of WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT; we are allowed to enter the off-duty world of characters that are made to entertain us, but have a secret life of their own. WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT used a detective story as a framework; WRECK IT RALPH develops into more of a buddy-movie adventure.
Ralph encounters Vanellope von Schweetz (Silverman) a glitch who isn?t supposed to be part of the game she is in. They form a reluctant alliance. Meanwhile Fix-It Felix searches for Ralph because he recognises that without him, their game cannot exist. The tough-talking Sergeant Calhoun (Lynch) from the first person shooter also becomes involved in the hunt for Ralph. It is notable that the four leads all have considerable comic chops and this keeps the performances funny and lively. Ralph, Felix, Vanelope and Calhoun are also partially modelled on the voice talent, although John C. Reilly?s hands are probably smaller in real life.
There is a definite attempt at bringing some gender balance to the story telling with two male characters and two female characters as leads. There?s even an interesting commentary about Disney princesses right at the very end, which seemed a little awkward to me, but clearly the Mouse House is aware that not everyone loves the princess concept.
Interestingly, of the 170 plus game characters that can apparently be found in the movie, there is a skew to ones from older games. This may simply reflect the video arcade setting. Director Moore says that licensing considerations or mere fan service didn?t drive him. Apparently, the team couldn?t come up with a Mario gag that was relevant, so left the popular character out. Word is the sequel will deal more with PC and console gaming.
The story moves quickly and the set pieces are brilliantly animated. There are many gaming in-jokes that older viewers can enjoy as the brightly coloured story whizzes by. WRECK IT RALPH is aimed at a family audience and both kids and their parents should be entertained by this funny, lightweight concoction.
WRECK IT RALPH is in cinemas now.? It runs for 108 minutes. I rated it 3.5/5.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Shipments of products as varied as flat-screen TVs, sneakers and snow shovels could sit idle at sea or get rerouted, at great time and expense, if more than 14,000 longshoremen go on strike as threatened ? a wide-ranging work stoppage that would immediately close cargo ports on the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico to container ships.
Commerce could be brought to a near standstill at major ports from Boston to Houston if the strike takes place on Sunday, potentially delivering a big blow to retailers and manufacturers still struggling to find their footing in a weak economy.
"If the port shuts down, nothing moves in or out," said Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation. And when the workers do return, "it's going to take time to clear out that backlog, and we don't know how long that it's going to take."
The 15 ports involved in the labor dispute move more than 100 million tons of goods each year, or about 40 percent of the nation's containerized cargo traffic. Losing them to a shutdown, even for a few days, could cost the economy billions of dollars.
In addition to transporting goods, U.S. factories also rely on container ships for parts and raw materials, meaning supply lines for all sorts of products could be squeezed.
"The global economy moves by water, and shutting down container ports along the East and Gulf coasts while the national economy remains fragile benefits no one," Deborah Hadden, acting port director at Massport, the public agency that oversees shipping terminals in Boston. It is not a part of the contract dispute.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott said "the livelihood of thousands of Florida families lies in the balance."
The master contract between the International Longshoremen's Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance, a group representing shipping lines, terminal operators and port associations, expired in September. The two sides agreed to extend it once already, for 90 days, but they have so far balked at extending it again when it expires at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.
The union said its members would agree to an extension only if the Maritime Alliance dropped a proposal to freeze the royalties workers get for every container they unload. The Alliance has argued that the longshoremen, who it said earn an average $124,138 per year in wages and benefits, are compensated well enough already.
Federal mediators have been trying to push negotiations along, but there has been no word from either side on the progress of the talks since Dec. 24. As recently as Dec. 19, the president of the longshoremen, Harold Daggett, said the talks weren't going well and that a strike was expected.
The work stoppage would not be absolute. Longshoremen would continue to handle military cargo, mail, passenger ships, non-containerized items like automobiles, and perishable commodities, like fresh food.
Joseph Ahlstrom, a professor at the State University of New York's Maritime College and a former cargo ship captain, called container ships the "lifeblood of the country."
"We don't fly in a lot of products. It's just too expensive," Ahlstrom said. "The bulk of the products we import come in inside containers."
The White House has weighed in on the issue, urging dockworkers and shipping companies Thursday to reach agreement "as quickly as possible" on a contract extension. Obama spokesman Matt Lehrich said the administration is monitoring the situation closely.
If it happens, the walkout could be the biggest national port disruption since 2002, when unionized dockworkers were locked out of 29 West Coast ports for 10 days because of a contract dispute.
The ports only reopened after President George W. Bush, invoking powers given to him by the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, ordered an 80-day cooling-off period. Some economists estimated that each day of that lockout cost the U.S. economy $1 billion. It took months for the retail supply chain to fully recover.
An East Coast port freeze would have its biggest impact at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, where 3,250 longshoremen handled 32.3 million tons of cargo in 2010. The authority is not a party to the contract dispute.
Other major ports affected would include Savannah, Ga., which handled 18 million tons, and Houston and Hampton Roads, Va., which each handled more than 12.5 million tons.
Thousands of other jobs would be directly affected by the shutdown. Truck drivers might not have any cargo to transport, tug boat captains no ships to guide and freight train operators nothing to haul.
Simultaneously, another labor dispute involving dock workers was playing out on the West Coast.
Longshoremen at several Pacific Northwest grain terminals worked Thursday under contract terms they soundly rejected last weekend. The owners implemented the terms after declaring talks at an impasse. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union has yet to announce its next move.
Workplace rules, not salary and benefits, have been the obstacle to a new deal.
The dispute involves terminals in Portland, Ore., Vancouver, Wash., and Seattle, where longshoremen have been working without an agreement since the last contract expired Sept. 30.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - World stocks and the euro turned lower on Thursday following comments from the U.S. Senate majority leader that the economy may be poised to go off the "fiscal cliff," while the yen hit a two-year low on expectations a new government in Tokyo will push for aggressive monetary stimulus.
Democrat Harry Reid criticized Republicans for refusing to go along with any tax increases as part of a U.S. budget remedy and said the economy seemed to be heading over the "fiscal cliff" of impending tax hikes and spending cuts.
Economists warn that the $600 billion in higher taxes and spending cuts set to kick in from January could push the world's largest economy into recession, dragging other countries with it.
U.S. stocks fell to session lows after Reid's comment, while world stocks dipped into negative territory and the euro turned negative against the U.S. dollar.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 99.38 points, or 0.76 percent, at 13,015.21. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 12.03 points, or 0.85 percent, at 1,407.80. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 20.46 points, or 0.68 percent, at 2,969.69.
The MSCI global index <.miwd00000pus> was down 0.3 percent, while European shares <.fteu3> were off 0.04 percent as trading resumed after the Christmas holiday break.
"Unfortunately, a term all of us are sick of hearing - the 'fiscal cliff' - appears to be dominating all aspects of the financial market and consumer confidence," said Joe Heider, principal at Rehmann Financial in Cleveland, Ohio.
EURO DIPS, YEN SLUMPS
The dollar rose to 85.92 yen, its highest since August 2010. It was last up 0.4 percent on the day at 85.91 yen with option barriers cited at 86 yen and stop-loss buy orders above 86.10 yen.
Investors accelerated their yen sales after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said his newly formed government would pursue a bold monetary policy, a flexible fiscal policy and a growth strategy to encourage private investment.
The yen has fallen roughly 10.5 percent versus the dollar in 2012, its biggest annual drop since 2005. At the same time, Japan's benchmark Nikkei is now up 22 percent for the year.
"Yen weakness, based on expectations that the new Japanese government will succeed in driving the dollar to 90 yen with a combination of more aggressive monetary and fiscal policy, is offering support to other currencies," said Marc Chandler, global head of currency strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman in New York.
The euro touched New York lows of $1.3214 following Reid's comments. It last stood at $1.3215, flat to slightly lower on the day.
The euro tends to benefit when U.S. budget negotiations run smoothly, but when there are snags, investor flows go into the safe-haven and highly liquid dollar.
U.S. BONDS TURN POSITIVE
Prices on longer-dated U.S. Treasuries turned positive after the Reid comments.
The bond market began trimming its decline earlier on data that showed a bigger-than-expected drop in American consumer confidence in December, spurring worries about flagging consumer spending causing a U.S. recession.
Benchmark 10-year Treasuries prices were 10/32 higher in price, yielding 1.7147 percent, compared with being down by 2/32 before the confidence data and Reid's remarks.

In this instance, as you research ways to protect your forex funds from a firm going bankrupt if you are in the US, you may see advertisements for setting up off-shore trust accounts. This is typically not a legitimate business option in the forex field and often requires significant costs. Therefore, funds in your forex account will likely be non-segregated, meaning that if your forex broker or dealer goes bankrupt you will not be able to get your money back.
Forex spreads vary from currency to currency and from dealer to dealer. The spread on a currency pair will determine the cost to the investor of participating in currency trades, in particular currencies because it is the difference in the bid, the price an investor can sell his currency at and the ask price, the price an investor has to pay for the currency. The bid is lower than the ask and the difference is paid to the broker or dealer. For individual traders it is important to note that some forex brokers vary the spread offered to individuals depending on how much money they have to invest or other criteria. The tightest spreads are in these cases end up being essentially unavailable to typical individual investors.
Forex trading platforms available to individuals will frequently omit some currency pairs as well as omit more complicated transactions. Individual investors should be aware that not all currency pairs that are available in the financial world will be available to them for their individual transactions. Many forex brokers advertise increased numbers of currency pairs available on their platforms. As the old year ends, business owners in Mammoth Lakes still debate formation of a Business Improvement District. The biggest challenge, according to Mammoth Lakes Tourism Director John Urdi is which retail stores to include in the new district and how much to tax them. Lodging and restaurants will definitely go into the district. It?s retail that has raised questions.
The idea focuses on businesses that directly benefit from tourism with a tax on their gross income. The proposed taxation goes like this ? Lodging pays 1%, retail and restaurant pay 1.5% and lift tickets and ski school pay 2%. All of this would raise an estimated $4 million. Around $2 million of that would go to marketing and sales, $175,000 to Public Relations, $1.1 million to air service marketing, $175,000 to special events and $175,000 to administrative costs and reserves. As Urdi said, the retail piece of this has held up a final agreement.
Sports shop owners Tom Cage and Tony Colasardo feel a 1% tax would be more fair. Cage said he and Colosardo have spent many hours meeting with retailers and Mammoth Mountain CEO Rusty Gregory who first proposed a Business Improvement District. Cage said that retailers do not generally support the 1.5% tax. He said this would give Mammoth Lakes the highest tax rate in the state. Said Cage, ?It?s too much, but we can support 1%.? Colasardo pointed out that a 1% increase for lodging would up the bed tax by roughly 12 to 13%. A 1.5% for retail would mean a bump in sales tax of 22%.
Another sticking point ? right now, Vons, Rite-Aid and the Do-It Center are not in line for new taxes. Retailers say those places do benefit from tourism and should pay, lowering the overall tax needed. Tourism Director Urdi said it?s all up in the air right now. He admitted that the retail part of the plan presents the biggest challenge. Urdi said, ?Lodging and restaurants are the easiest to define how they benefit from tourism.? Asked why Vons, Rite-Aid and the Do-It Center are not on the list to be taxed, Urdi said the exploratory committee on the new taxes does not want to impact local people. Urdi called Mammoth?s Improvement District ?groundbreaking? because it will involve more than lodging which is what most BID?s in the state include. Urdi said, ?The whole goal is to get the community marketed, including Mammoth Mountain.?
He is a believer that marketing will bring more people and more dollars to town. Urdi sees leveraging free air fare with lodging and dining packages as one way to do that. He said, ?We need people to keep Mammoth in the top of their minds or they will go somewhere else.? He said marketing efforts could focus on mid-week and shoulder seasons to even out the economy. That?s been a Mammoth Lakes goal for decades. As for the improvement district, Urdi said the support for it outweighs concerns.
The exploratory committee of some 18 business people will meet again January 8. Urdi said they will get on the phone with their attorney and deal with what retailers can be taxed. Tom Cage said he has talked to twelve other retailers who ?have heartburn about Vons, Rite-Aid and the Do-It Center not being included.? Cage said why not include them and lower the tax rate. With the sales tax in Mammoth Lakes at 7.25%, when Measure R?s .50% is added along with Measure 30 at the start of the new year at .25%, the total will equal 8%. Then add 1.5% for retailers and they sit at 9.5%. Many Mammoth retailers say that?s just too high.

Just don't expect to see celestial fireworks. Next week's impact near the moon's north pole by the washing machine-sized spacecraft won't carve a gaping crater or kick up a lot of debris. And it'll be dark when it happens.
"We are not expecting a big flash or a big explosion" that will be visible from Earth, said mission chief scientist Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Still, it'll mark a violent end to a successful mission that has produced the most high-resolution gravity maps of Earth's closest neighbor. On Friday, engineers will turn off the science instruments in preparation for Monday's finale.
Previous unmanned trips to the moon have studied its lumpy gravitational field, but Ebb and Flow are the first ones dedicated to this goal. Since entering orbit over New Year's weekend, the formation-flying spacecraft have peered past the craggy surface into the interior.
Initially, the spacecraft flew about 35 miles (56 kilometers) above the surface and later dropped down to 14 miles (22 kilometers). About an hour before Monday's impact, they will fire their engines until they run out of fuel and slam at 3,800 mph (6,115 kph) into a predetermined target ? a mountain near the north pole that's far away from the Apollo landing sites.
Ebb will hit first followed by Flow 20 seconds later. Though the drama won't be visible from Earth, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will fly over the crash site afterward and attempt to spot them.
The last time?NASA?aimed at the moon was in 2009. The world watched through telescopes and over the Internet as a spacecraft and its booster rocket smashed into a permanently shadowed crater ? a one-two punch that fizzled when spectators saw little more than a fuzzy white flash.
The mission's end will also mark the close of a student campaign that used cameras aboard the spacecraft to image lunar targets including on the moon's far side. The MoonKAM project was spearheaded by a science education company founded by Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. Ride died of pancreatic cancer in July at age 61.
Even after Ebb and Flow complete their mission, scientists will continue to pore over the bounty of data they collected.
Among their findings so far: The moon is more beat up than previously imagined. The crust is much thinner than thought. And there's no evidence that Earth once had two moons that collided to form the one we see in the night sky.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels fully captured a northern town near the Turkish border on Tuesday after weeks of siege and heavy fighting, activists said.
The takeover of Harem, a town of 20,000 in northern Idlib province, was the latest in a string of recent rebel successes that include the capture of wide areas along the border with Turkey. Most of those areas have been in northern Aleppo province, where anti-government forces have captured at least three large military bases.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebels captured Harem in the early hours of Tuesday. Mohammed Kanaan, an Idlib-based activist, said the last post to be taken was the historic citadel, which overlooked the town. The army had turned the citadel into a military post.
"Harem is fully liberated now," Kanaan he said via Skype. He added that as the rebels pounded army posts and checkpoints in Harem, the troops withdrew to the citadel that later fell in the hands of rebels.
Rami-Abdul-Rahman, who heads to Observatory, said nearly 30 soldiers and pro-government gunmen surrendered late Monday. He added that rebels set free all gunmen at the age of 16 or less and referred others to local tribunals.
"Harem was very important because it is one of the towns that was loyal to the regime," Abdul-Rahman said by telephone about the town that is nearly a mile from the Turkish border.
In his traditional Christmas address, Pope Benedict XVI decried the slaughter of the "defenseless" in Syria, where anti-regime activists estimate more than 40,000 have died in fighting since the uprising began in March 2011.
The pope encouraged Arab spring nations, where long-serving dictators were forced to step down.
In Aleppo province, which neighbors Idlib, local activist Mohammed Saeed said rebels attacked a military base in the town of Mannagh near the border with Turkey. He said it is one of four air bases in the province.
Regime forces have been using helicopters to carry supplies to besieged areas and to attack rebel positions.
The regime has had increasing difficulty sending supplies by land to Aleppo province after rebels captured in October the strategic town Maaret al-Numan. The town is on the highway that links Damascus with Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial center and a major battleground in the civil war since July.
"Airplanes and helicopters are the only way to send supplies since the Free Syrian Army controls the land," Saeed said. He added that rebels are also laying a siege to Aleppo's international airport known as Nairab and threatening to shoot down military or civilians planes using it.
In the Damascus suburb of Jaramana, opposition gunmen ambushed the head of military intelligence in the area and seriously wounded him. He later died of his wounds, the Observatory said.

Free books from NASA, the Hubble Space Telescope's science team and the European Space Agency bring Earth and the heavens to life ? as long as you have an iPad, and the patience to wait for a longish download.
Even if you have a regular old computer, you can still download the books about Hubble and its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope, as PDF files. But you'll miss out on all the interactive features.
Those two books were unveiled today by the Baltimore-based Space Telescope Science Institute, which takes care of the science programming for the two NASA-funded telescopes. They're joining the ESA's first iBook, "Earth From Space: The Living Beauty," on my iPad bookshelf.
The Hubble book guides you through scores of pictures from the world's most famous space telescope, organized into categories ranging from cosmology to planetary science. There's also a chapter on the telescope itself, with a 3-D model and a diagram you can tap on to learn about all the components. (Our Flash interactive about Hubble takes a similar approach.) When you tally up all the interactives, videos and picture galleries, the content adds up to a lot more than the 84 pages on the screen.

The 74-page e-book about the Webb telescope uses a similar approach to explain the science behind the $8.8 billion observatory, which is currently scheduled for launch in 2018. There aren't any pictures from the Webb, of course, but the book's interactives, videos and photo galleries explain how the telescope will observe the cosmic frontiers in infrared wavelengths.
"These new e-books from NASA will allow people to discover Hubble and Webb in a whole new way ? both the science and the technology behind building them," Amber Straughn, an astrophysicist on the Webb telescope project at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said in today's news release. "They collect all of the amazing resources about these two observatories in an excellent product that I think people will really enjoy."
While the NASA iBooks look outward, ESA's iBook looks back toward Earth, incorporating stunning images from Europe's Earth-observing satellites. The 104 pages cover our planet from the core to the cryosphere, from the oceans to the wilderness. You can set color-coded virtual globes spinning with a brush of your fingertip.

While the Hubble and Webb e-books are downloadable via Apple's iBookstore, you download "Earth From Space" directly from ESA's website?and follow the instructions. You'll need to be patient: Each book packs in hundreds of megabytes' worth of data, so the download can take as long as 20 minutes over a home broadband connection. There were times when I wondered whether it'd ever finish. But if you're a fan of space imagery, these books are well worth the wait ? especially when you consider that they're free.
