Hough on 'DWTS' return: It was a last-minute call

By Michael Maloney, TODAY contributor

Frederick M. Brown / Getty Images

All signs were pointing to the fact the last season of "Dancing With the Stars" was Derek Hough?s final one. He?d not only competed in 10 seasons, won three mirror ball trophies and sustained a neck injury, but in a video package played during the finale, Hough sure acted like he was hanging up his sequins.

?It was my last,? Hough confirmed to The Clicker. ?I was planning on not coming back. It really felt like the end.?

So what changed his mind?

Hough decided he was simply too busy to quit. Yep, too busy.? Along with his sister, Julianne Hough, the fan favorite dancer is executive producing a series called ?Blackpool? for Starz which is set against the backdrop of the international competitive ballroom dancing scene.

The siblings will not only produce the series, but the pair will also act as head choreographers.

Hough?s always been too savvy to air any personal laundry (that may or may not be piling up) during his run on the show, preferring instead to keep the drama on the dance floor. Now, he?s eagerly looking forward to letting it explode in the fictional stories he?ll be helping to create. ?

?It?s a world I know very well,? he said of ?Blackpool?s? backdrop. ?It?ll be fictionalized -- not autobiographical. We?re meeting with the writers, and it?s starting to come together.?

The monumental task of developing and running a show triggered Hough?s choice to return to "Dancing With the Stars."

?I decided I?m better when I?m busy,? he said. ?My other projects will benefit from me doing another season of ?Dancing With the Stars.? My creative mind will be going. I tend to get things done more often and more quickly when I?m busy."

Fortunately, one thing Hough hasn?t had to add to his schedule is surgery for his neck injury. ?I spoke to the spinal guy (after last season) and he said unless it?s something that?s taking me completely out, let?s not start cutting into your neck,? Hough said. ?I am going to take more care of (myself). I?ll be more aware.?

There?s another big reason Hough signed up for another season of standing in front of Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli each week. ?I love being a part of this show. It was a last-minute decision, but it?s a decision that I?m very, very happy with -- even more so now because I have (?American Idol? alum) Kellie Pickler as a partner.?

Pickler is not only thrilled that Hough made the decision that he did, but she also agrees with it. ?When life gives you the opportunity to jump, you should jump,? she told The Clicker. ?The chances of your parachute opening are good.?

?Your mind is like a parachute,? Hough added. ?It works better when it?s open.?

Are you happy Hough decided to return? Tell us on our Facebook page.

Munoz leads after 1st round at HSBC Champions

(AP) ? Spain's Azahara Munoz shot a 7-under 65 Thursday for a two-stroke lead after the first round of the HSBC Women's Champions, which features 17 of the top 20 LPGA players.

Munoz played in the day's first group and finished with seven birdies. Five players at Sentosa Golf Club shared second at 67: Stacy Lewis, Karin Sjodin, Lizette Salas, Pornanong Phatlum and Sun Young Yoo.

Munoz is coming off her strongest season on tour, winning her first title at the Sybase Match Play Championship and enjoying nine top-10 finishes.

"I don't know what it is but my best three rounds on tour have been first tee time," she said. "I really like it. You don't have to wait, it's super nice, the greens are perfect. I think it gets me going."

Paula Creamer was in a four-way tie at 68 despite an injured right shoulder from a car accident. The five-car accident happened on the way to the airport after the Honda LPGA tournament in Thailand.

Two other players, Ai Miyazato and Suzann Pettersen, sustained minor injuries in the crash. Miyazato pulled out of the HSBC Champions on Wednesday, citing stiffness in her back, neck and shoulder.

Also at 68 were top-ranked Yani Tseng of Taiwan, Danielle Kang and Chella Choi.

Tseng, a five-time major winner, was five shots off the lead before sinking a 25-foot putt for eagle on the 18th hole. Tseng hasn't won a tournament in nearly a year, but she has started the 2013 season with a second-place finish at the Australian Open and a tie for third at Thailand last weekend.

She said she made a bet with her manager, Naya Hsu, on Thursday morning to better motivate herself. If she scored a 68 or better, Hsu agreed to go skydiving with her in Hawaii.

"When that putt dropped in, I was so happy," Tseng said. "I was looking for her. I saw her face, I think she's going to cry.

"I think it feels good because I haven't had that feeling for a long time," she said. "The last two weeks, kind of a little rushed, trying to play well on the first day. And today I've been patient because I know it's only the first day, I still have three days left."

Creamer was just happy to be on the course after her accident. She said she jammed her shoulder when she hit the dashboard of the car and suffered whiplash after slamming her head off the headrest.

"At the beginning of the round, I really couldn't feel my right side and I didn't know if I was going to be able to even go," she said. "I thought if I could get through the first five holes, I would be OK. I have no expectations whatsoever this week," she said.

Second-ranked Na Yeon Choi, who is trying to close in on Tseng's No. 1 ranking, shot a 69. Michelle Wie, South Korea's Jiyai Shin and Australia's Karrie Webb were at 71, with Pettersen at 73. Defending champion Angela Stanford had a quadruple bogey on the par-4 13th en route to a 76.

Audrey Hepburn resurrected for chocolate ad

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

A pretty woman sits on a bus and waits for her journey to continue. She peers into her purse, eyes a bar of chocolate. Outside, a handsome man gives her a smile -- and next thing you know, she's bounding out of the bus and jumping into the stranger's car. And, of course, having a bite of that chocolate bar, all while "Moon River" plays in the background.

The pretty woman? The Oscar-winning actress and humanitarian Audrey Hepburn, who died in 1993. The scene? It may look like a lost sequence from the gamine actress' breakthrough role in 1953's "Roman Holiday" (colorized, natch), but it's actually a combination of footage shot on the Amalfi Coast in Italy (says the Toronto Sun) and a CGI resurrection of the actress -- who happened to sing "Moon River" in 1961's "Breakfast at Tiffany's."

The purpose? To sell the British chocolate bar Galaxy. But not everyone finds the pairing sweet -- critics say the ad is disrespectful to the actress, now dead for 20 years, who can't complain that her image is being ill-used. But Hepburn isn't the first famous face to come back from the dead to shill for a product -- a young Fred Astaire was used in 1997 to push the Dirt Devil vacuum, a deal authorized by his widow but dissed by his daughter, who said she was "saddened that after his wonderful career he was sold to the devil."

In Hepburn's case, she can't stand up for herself to either support or discredit the move, which means it's up to her estate to make these decisions. And her sons, who control that estate, are all for it: Sean Ferrer and Luca Dotti issued a statement saying Hepburn would be "proud" of her latest role, noting that she "often spoke about her love of chocolate and how it lifted her spirit."

They probably didn't mean that last bit literally.

KUDOS TO THE PARENTS OF P.S. 59: WHAT THEY CAN TEACH ...

dHayR

Yesterday I criticized how the whole slavery math problem situation at P.S. 59 was handled. Although the teachers involved did not make the best decisions, the worst decisions of all were made by student teacher Aziza Harding and NYU Professor Charlton McIlvain.

Harding did not bother to speak to her cooperating teacher about the matter. McIlvain rang the alarm bells by calling the media. Indeed, there might have been more sinister motives behind what either McIlvain or Harding did. Hopefully time will reveal if these people were motivated by publicity or just mere stupidity.

Yet, I must give credit to P.S. 59?s principal?Adele Schroeter. She called in the parents in an attempt to provide an open forum on the matter. The parents, for their part, defended their children?s 4th-grade teacher,?Jane Youn.

The parents exercised loads more common sense than Harding or McIlvain. While the parents did not believe that the homework sheet was appropriate, they also recognized that the sheet did not represent everything their children had learned about slavery in Ms. Youn?s class. They fiercely defended their children?s teacher, recognizing her skill and hard work on behalf of their children. The parents saw this for what it was: a mistake from which they could learn.

Notice how the parents are not calling for the DOE to take ?disciplinary action?. Notice how they are not calling for anyone?s head on a plate. Notice how they were able to communicate with their children about what they learned in class instead of jumping to rash conclusions.

My hats off to the parents of P.S. 59.

This story highlights an interesting point about Bloomberg?s Department of Education. One of Bloomberg?s first changes, through his puppet Panel for Educational Policy, was to hire so-called ?Parent Coordinators? for each school. Ostensibly, these Parent Coordinators were supposed to be liaisons between parents and their schools. Instead, they turned out to be people whose jobs it is to tell parents only the things the administration wants parents to know. Parents are not encouraged to bring their concerns to the Parent Coordinators. Even if they do, it is unlikely that those concerns go any further.

The Parent Coordinator position, along with the replacement of local school boards with a centralized PEP answerable only to Bloomberg, effectively shut parents out of any say over how their children get educated. This has allowed Bloomberg a free hand to close schools, fire teachers and hollow out enrichment programs. He made sure to keep the parents at arms? length before embarking on his destruction of the city?s schools.

We see what happened at P.S. 59 when parents got involved. Hopefully, their defense of their children?s teacher will make the DOE think twice about taking any disciplinary measures against her.

Parental involvement is the single greatest antidote to Bloomberg?s destructive educational policies.

This lesson should be heeded by our union. For the past 10 years, they have kissed up to the Bloomberg machine in hopes of getting some scraps. The UFT has been the puppy dogs at Bloomberg?s dinner table, anxiously awaiting a morsel to fall from his plate and grateful for every bit they get. Where has it gotten us?

The union must shift alliances away from centralized mayoral control and towards decentralized community control. The union must advocate for parents to be partners, not onlookers, in the education of their children.

We know why the union has refused to take this type of stance. They fear helping parents gain too much of a voice will usurp their own seats at the table. How much smaller can the seat at the table get as it is? 10 years of mayoral control have reduced our seat to a mere stool, one with wobbly legs at that.

Only the community and only the parents can help teachers restore their seat at the table and ensure educational integrity for our children.

The actions of the parents of P.S. 59 is a microcosm of this fact. Their advocacy has strengthened the position of an embattled teacher. It has also ensured a measure of integrity in their children?s education by double-checking what they learned about slavery and defending a strong teacher.

Unity take heed: this is where your future lies.

Samsung HomeSync Android TV box hands-on (video)

DNP Samsung HomeSync Android TV box handson video

Yesterday, Samsung announced the HomeSync Android TV box, and as expected that device is making an appearance here on the MWC 2013 show floor. Boxy media hubs can only be so attractive, but the HomeSync's grey-and-black aesthetic is sleek, and the brushed-metal finish will look familiar to anyone who's used a Sammy handset or laptop. There's a pair of USB 3.0 inputs, an HDMI port, optical audio and Ethernet connections on the rear, and buttons for power and settings on the front, but you can easily hide the console deep inside your home theater rig -- it can be controlled exclusively with a Android 4.2-equipped smartphone or tablet.

The Jelly Bean-powered HomeSync runs a 1.7GHz dual-core processor with 1TB of storage, and it supports up to eight accounts for uploading, downloading and sharing content between devices. Those with a Galaxy device will be able to wirelessly stream content to their TVs in full 1080p, and Play Store access is on board for downloading additional media. It worked well during our hands-on, but as with any WiFi-equipped streaming device, there was noticeable lag when mirroring the smartphone display on the connected HDTV. Still, assuming the price is right, we can see this being a solid component within any home theater setup. Take a closer look in our hands-on video after the break.

Lyoto Machida pulls out split-decision win over Dan Henderson at UFC 157

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Lyoto Machida took a split decision over Dan Henderson in the co-main event at UFC 157 on Saturday. The judges saw it 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 for Machida.

Machida was elusive as usual in the first round, but Henderson was able to sneak in and land a few kicks and punches. At the end of the round, Machida took Henderson down with a leg trip and landed strikes.

The second round showed Machida still being elusive and keeping his distance from Henderson. Machida tried for a front kick several times, but couldn't land it. Meanwhile, Henderson couldn't land much.

[Also: Ronda Rousey survives UFC debut, wins via first-round arm bar]

Henderson is known for his big, overhand punches. Most of the time, when he throws it, it can mean the end of a fight. However, he had trouble getting close enough to Machida for the overhand to work.

In the third round, Machida moved in for a takedown but ended up with Henderson on top. Henderson used elbows from the top, but Machida was able to get out with less than two minutes left in the fight.

Before the fight, UFC president Dana White said that the winner of this bout will get the next title shot. UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will put the title up against Chael Sonnen in April, but the next fight will likely go to Machida.

[Also: Josh Koscheck suffers upset loss]

Machida was once the UFC light heavyweight champion, but lost the title to Rua in 2010. Since then, he has wins over Randy Couture and Ryan Bader, but losses to current champion Jon Jones and Quinton Jackson. It will be his third chance at the light heavyweight title. He won it with a knockout of Rashad Evans in 2009, but lost to Jones in 2011.

Henderson had a long layoff between fights. His last bout was one of the best in MMA history. In November of 2011, Henderson defeated Mauricio Rua in a five-round decision. Since then, Henderson had a fight lined up with Jones in September, but had to pull out at the last minute because of a knee injury. His record falls to 29-9. He's 42 years old, and against Machida, looked slow and old for the first time in his career.

Samsung?s Galaxy Note 8.0 Will Make Its International Debut In Q2, We Go Hands-On

note8-2That Samsung was tinkering with a slightly smaller Galaxy Note tablet shouldn?t come as a surprise, but consider this the final word if you still weren't a believer. Samsung has just officially revealed that the Galaxy Note 8.0 is indeed a real product, and that it?s planning on rolling the tab out across the globe starting in Q2 2013. Though the company didn?t have anything firm to share when it came to release dates or pricing, it did have plenty to talk about in terms of hardware. The Note 8.0 tablet runs a TouchWiz?d version of Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, and sports a Exynos 4 Quad processor clocked at 1.6GHz, 2GB of RAM, and (you guessed it!) an 8-inch TFT LCD display running at 1280 x 800. Perhaps it's not the most surprising spec sheet we?ll see here at MWC, but it?s certainly plenty of horsepower for a tablet this size and it shows (more on that later).

Top Four Reasons For Hiring Workers' Compensation Lawyers

Many never really know how important a lawyer is until they find themselves in a greatly threatened condition. For most, it's a blessing to never have the need for one because this only means that everything in their lives is run according to the standards of the law, but life is rarely ever that perfect. There are so many components to the dynamics of life that can lead to injustice; in a typical workplace alone, a lot of unfair situations arise that require employees to seek the services of lawyers.

For average working individuals, workers' compensation lawyers are the legal professionals they need the most to preserve and protect their rights, and provided below are the four most common reasons why workers turn to these professionals' legal services.

1.Unfair dismissal - In many workplaces, certain disputes arise which often have employers taking sides. When this happens, keeping the peace is usually achieved by letting go of the un-favoured party. This is always deemed as unfair especially if keeping the peace is the only reason behind the call. Though superiors may present supporting reasons for the dismissal, the affected party can challenge them especially if there is no real solid evidence of these reasons actually affecting the quality of work of the dismissed party which is essentially the only reason why he should be let go in the first place.

2. Sexual discrimination - Some may think that this no longer exists in the workplace but sexual discrimination remains a significant problem. Before, women were usually at the receiving end, but these days even men can suffer the inappropriate advances and behaviour of their female superiors. Dealing with sexual discrimination is very stressful for workers and most of them struggle with the decision to stay or go. Compo lawyers provide these clients the advice they need to make the appropriate decision. Should the clients decide to leave the company, the lawyer can work out the right amount of compensation for their hardship or suffering so they can start anew in a different setting.

3. Personal injury - An employee can negotiate this himself or hire a compensation lawyer so he can make the rightful financial claim and receive the treatment necessary to get better. An experienced compo lawyer will help make things easier for the employee by expertly handling negotiations, determining terms for the settlement and even assessing the extent of the damage the injury has created in his life. In the end, with the services of the compo lawyer, the employee will walk away with the compensation that he truly deserves.

4. Why not? - Most compo lawyers often do not charge until they get a win, so employees in need of professional consultation or services can get all the benefits of having expert help without worrying about the cost.

NSW compensation lawyers are trained and experienced enough to fight for your legal rights.

Bulgaria faces deadlock after government quits

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgaria's parliament on Thursday accepted the government's decision to resign in the face of anti-austerity protests, opening the way for an early election that may benefit fringe parties and make it hard to form a stable government.

Outgoing Prime Minister Boiko Borisov, praised by investors for cutting the budget deficit, lost support from voters in the European Union's poorest state over his failure to raise living standards or stamp out graft.

After mass protests set off by high energy bills, Borisov stepped down on Wednesday -- the latest administration to fall in Europe's four-year-old debt crisis.

Parliament voted on Thursday to accept the move and President Rosen Plevneliev will now ask the three biggest parties if they want to form a government to rule until a parliamentary election due in July.

But both Borisov's GERB party and the main opposition Socialists have said they do not want to participate in a caretaker cabinet, so Plevneliev could schedule an election for as early as April. Opinions polls put both parties on about 22-23 percent, suggesting no clear majority in the new parliament.

"We are open for dialogue with all parties but GERB, who ruined everything," said Socialist leader Sergei Stanishev, whose party was level in polls with Borisov's before the protests and may have benefited from the unrest.

The cabinet's departure brought some calm after a chaotic week of rallies against the government and foreign-owned power utilities and a threat by Bulgarian officials to strip one of them, Czech power group CEZ, of its license.

Boriana Dimitrova, an analyst with pollster Alpha Research, said it could push voters towards the political fringe.

"The two key political powers are not strong enough to form a stable government," she said. "The recent protests indicate there is growing support for radical, populist parties, which will also make it harder to form a cabinet."

CALM, FOR NOW

Borisov, a former guard to Soviet-era dictator Todor Zhivkov, won adoration from voters by building highways and improving roads so badly pot-holed that cars could lose wheels and travel across the small country could take up most of a day.

Around 2,000 Bulgarians waving GERB party flags, including farmers driving tractors and a truck full of pigs, cheered in front of parliament in support of Borisov.

"If all possibilities are exhausted...I will form an interim government, quickly and responsibly," said Plevneliev.

Borisov's administration also impressed foreign portfolio investors by freezing wages and pensions and cracking down on the grey economy by digitally linking firms ranging from the largest factory to the smallest kiosk to the tax office.

But those moves angered many in the Black Sea state of 7.3 million, who are also frustrated at his failure to make good on his 2009 election pledge to stamp out endemic corruption and reform inefficient healthcare and education systems.

"Am I pleased with Borisov's resignation? He's just the same as the ones before. They're all corrupt and they don't care about people," said Filip Ivanov, a 37-year-old taxi driver.

Borisov's popularity has suffered due to growing frustration over the slow plod from poverty of a country which has failed to grow convincingly since recession hit in 2009. Living standards are about 45 percent of the EU average, the bloc's lowest.

For many here, where wages average about 400 euros a month and pensions about half that, the final straw was winter power bills which at times exceeded incomes due to price rises that began to bite as temperatures fell.

In protests this month, tens of thousands blocked roads and some clashed with police and attacked offices of power distributors CEZ, Czech Energo Pro and Austrian EVN. The utilities say the increase was in line with a government approved hike in prices last year and said they had done nothing wrong.

Borisov's threat to strip CEZ of its power distribution license has also put Sofia at odds with fellow European Union member the Czech Republic and raised eyebrows over its adherence to the bloc's stipulation that its members follow due process.

But Bulgaria's power regulator appeared to soften its stance slightly on Wednesday, saying CEZ may be able to keep its license if it reverses violations of the public procurement law. CEZ shares fell 2.8 percent on Thursday to a four-year low and Prague urged the European Union to step in.

Before stepping down, Borisov tried to appease voters by sacking Finance Minister Simeon Djankov, a lightning rod for criticism for his leading the charge on belt tightening, and promising a cut in power bills as of March.

For their part, the Socialists have pledged to raise taxes on the rich and scrap a flat 10 percent income tax rate it introduced in 2009 They also want to raise the minimum wage, restart the Russian-backed Belene nuclear power project and to impose strict control on utilities and fight monopolies. that has been a draw for foreign investors.

High-Antioxidant Diet May Not Prevent Stroke ... - Health.com

Hwe009ml High Antioxidant Diet May Not Prevent Stroke, Dementia, Study Finds

By Carina Storrs
HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 20 (HealthDay News) ? Antioxidants are celebrated as ?brain foods? and ?super foods,? but a new study suggests that not all diets high in antioxidants reduce the risk of dementia and stroke.

The study involved more than 5,000 people in the Netherlands who were 55 years and older. Researchers determined each participant?s antioxidant score, based on questionnaires about the foods they typically ate, and kept track of whether they developed dementia or had a stroke over the next 14 years.

?We asked, ?Is the [measure] of total antioxidant levels the important predictor for dementia and stroke, irrespective of what foods are contributing??? said Elizabeth Devore, an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston and lead author of the study.

Although the study did not find lower rates of dementia and stroke among people with antioxidant-rich diets, similar research in other populations has come to different conclusions. For example, a study of older Italian adults found that higher antioxidant levels were linked to lower stroke risk.

The difference between the Dutch and Italian groups could lie in the types of antioxidants they eat, Devore said.

Almost 90 percent of the variability in antioxidant levels among the Dutch participants was due to coffee and tea consumption, whereas the antioxidants in the Italian cohort came largely from eating fruits and vegetables.

?There?s a lot of [studies] to suggest that higher fruit and vegetable intake is associated with lower risk of stroke,? Devore said. ?It is possible that, though the Italian study did report diet antioxidant score, that is really being driven by those specific foods.?

?It is not about total antioxidant level, it is about specific antioxidant-rich foods,? Devore added.

The research in the Dutch population was published Feb. 20 in the online issue of the journal Neurology.

?It?s a little bit hard to interpret the finding that total antioxidant capacity of the diet does not have a role, because of the abundance of evidence showing that oxidative stress [on cells] has a role in these diseases,? said Gene Bowman, a nutritional epidemiologist at Oregon Health and Science University, in Portland.

However, ?it may be that the antioxidants that they?re capturing aren?t the ones that are the big players,? Bowman said.

Still, the idea of looking at total antioxidant capacity instead of individual antioxidant-rich foods is a new and important approach, he said.

?We?ve already had large observational studies showing us that certain antioxidants are linked to less stroke and dementia risk, but when giving these antioxidants in clinical trials to reduce risk for less stroke and dementia, the results have been disappointing,? Bowman said.

The current study included almost 5,400 people who did not show signs of dementia and almost 5,300 people who had never had a stroke.

Participants answered questionnaires about how often and how much they ate 170 typical Dutch foods. The researchers looked up the antioxidant capacity of each food item, which had previously been determined by chemical analyses, and added up the capacity of all the food items to calculate each participant?s antioxidant score.

?There are thousands of antioxidants in the diet, and some of them may have more antioxidant power,? Devore explained. This calculation allowed the group to estimate the whole antioxidant measure, although it does not take into account how antioxidants in different food items could influence one another, she added.

?The typical Dutch diet tends to be a lot of meat, pork or beef, a lot of dairy, coffee and tea, and lower intakes of fruits and vegetables,? Devore said. The diet in this older population probably did not change much over the 14-year follow-up, she added.

Between 1990, when the researchers conducted the food surveys and collected the first health reports, and 2004, 599 of the participants developed dementia and 601 had a stroke. There was no difference between the groups that had high and low antioxidant capacity and the rates of these diseases.

Devore and her colleagues also failed to find a connection between total diet antioxidant power and brain sizes among the 462 participants who got an MRI test.

These findings suggest that it is time to go back to studying individual antioxidants, but more comprehensively, Devore said.

A connection between vitamin C and vitamin E and reduced risk of stroke and dementia, respectively, has been found in a number of studies, but there are probably other antioxidants such as flavonoids found in foods including onions, peas and berries that could be important, Devore said.

For his part, Bowman thinks there could still be a connection between antioxidant capacity in the Dutch group and dementia and stroke risk, but the researchers are not seeing it because they used food questionnaires to evaluate antioxidant levels.

?An alternative approach would be to look at dietary signatures in the blood,? Bowman said.

Measuring nutrient levels in the blood could not only give a direct indication of what is available to the brain, but it could help avoid the inaccuracies in what people say they eat and differences in how well individuals absorb what they eat, he added.

In a 2012 study, Bowman and his colleagues developed a test to measure the levels of a panel of nutrients in the blood and found a connection among elderly people between high levels of vitamins B, C, D, and E and improved cognitive function and larger brains.

Although this connection has to be studied more, Bowman is working to start a clinical trial to test whether increasing the level of vitamins C and E could indeed help protect the brain from diseases.

In the meantime, Bowman gives his patients the same advice: to cut out the junk, such as trans fats, and load up your diet with antioxidant-rich nutrients. He only recommends antioxidant supplements temporarily if someone has low blood levels.

Novel coronavirus well-adapted to humans, susceptible to immunotherapy

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

The new coronavirus that has emerged in the Middle East is well-adapted to infecting humans but could potentially be treated with immunotherapy, according to a study to be published on February 19 in mBio?, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology. The study indicates that the virus HCoV-EMC can penetrate the lining of the passageways in the lung and evade the innate immune system as easily as a cold virus can, signs that HCoV-EMC is well-equipped for infecting human cells. The study also reveals that the virus is susceptible to treatment with interferons, components of the immune system that have been used successfully to treat other viral diseases, opening a possible mode of treatment in the event of a large-scale outbreak.

"Surprisingly, this coronavirus grows very efficiently on human epithelial cells," says co-author Volker Thiel of The Institute of Immunobiology at Kantonal Hospital in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Thiel says these new data indicate that although HCoV-EMC may have jumped from animals to humans very recently, it is just as well adapted to infecting the human respiratory tract as other, more familiar human coronaviruses, including the SARS virus and the common cold virus, HCoV-229E.

HCoV-EMC first came to light in June when it was isolated from a man in Saudi Arabia who died from a severe respiratory infection and kidney failure. Since that time, public health officials have identified an additional 10 infected persons, nine of whom had traveled in the Middle East and one who had recent contact with an infected person. The emergence of HCoV-EMC, which is related to the SARS virus, has raised concern that it may eventually lead to a pandemic much like the SARS pandemic of 2002-2003, which is estimated to have sickened over 8,000 people and killed 774 worldwide.

For the mBio? study, Thiel and his colleagues tested how well HCoV-EMC could infect and multiply in the entryways to the human lung using cultured bronchial cells manipulated to mimic the airway lining. The lining of the lung, or epithelium, represents an important first barrier against respiratory viruses, but they apparently don't put up a big fight against HCoV-EMC, says Thiel. He and his colleagues found that human airway epithelial cells are highly susceptible to HCoV-EMC infection and that the virus is able to multiply at a faster initial rate than the SARS virus.

"The other thing we found is that the viruses [HCoV-EMC, SARS, and the common cold virus] are all similar in terms of host responses: they don't provoke a huge innate immune response," Thiel says. This is an indication that HCoV-EMC is already well adapted to the human host and that the virus uses that same strategy other coronaviruses use for evading the host's non-specific immune mechanisms.

The authors asked themselves whether boosting this weak immune response might diminish the virus' ability to infect airway epithelial cells. They found that pre-treating the cells with lambda-type interferons, proteins that are released by host cells in response to infection and enable communication between cells to mount an immune response, significantly reduced the number of infected cells. This is encouraging from a treatment standpoint, note the authors, since interferons have also shown a good deal of promise for treating SARS and another viral illness, Hepatitis C.

Thiel and co-author Ronald Dijkman emphasize that their work with HCoV-EMC would not have been possible without the efforts of many different research groups from Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands, and Denmark.

Ongoing collaboration is crucial, they say. Future research to head off outbreaks of HCoV-EMC and other emerging diseases requires cooperation and trust among scientists and health agencies, a goal that is not always achieved. The future of this virus is uncertain, Thiel points out, but access to samples from a wider range of patients and epidemiological work could answer some fundamental questions, including where the virus is coming from and what the true prevalence of the virus is.

"We don't know whether the cases we observe are the tip of the iceberg," says Thiel. "Or whether many more people are infected without showing severe symptoms."

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing reacts to financial review team's implicit recommendation of emergency manager

?DETROIT,?MI -- Mayor?Dave Bing said he'll stay focused on his current initiatives in a dry statement reacting to a financial review team's implicit recommendation that Gov. Rick Snyder appoint an emergency manager for the city.

(More: State says Detroit has no satisfactory plan for restructuring in implicit emergency manager recommendation)

?Certainly I am not surprised by the findings of the State?s financial review team," Bing said. "My administration has been saying for the past four years that the city is under financial stress."

Bing has said repeatedly that he doesn't believe an emergency manager could accomplish much more than his staff has.

Despite drastic cutbacks to city services, Detroit is facing a $327 million budget deficit and long-term debt exceeding $13 billion.

Bing and City Council, though frequently butting heads in the process, implemented dozens of reforms and dramatic cuts to employee wages and city services in over the last year in an attempt to prevent a state takeover.

But the changes, which included major outsourcing moves, health care changes, fire station closures and other desperate measures like selling scrap metal from abandoned vehicles, have proved inadequate, according to the review team's report.

?If the governor decides to appoint an emergency financial manager, he or she, like my administration, is going to need resources -- particularly in the form of cash and additional staff.

?As I have said before, my Administration will stay focused on the initiatives that most directly impact the citizens of Detroit: public safety, public lighting, transportation, recreation and neighborhood blight removal.?

Designing Life: Should Babies Be Genetically Engineered?

NEW YORK ? The increasing power and accessibility of genetic technology may one day give parents the option of modifying their unborn children, in order to spare offspring from disease or, conceivably, make them tall, well muscled, intelligent or otherwise blessed with desirable traits.

Would this change mean empowering parents to give their children the best start possible? Or would it mean designer babies who could face unforeseen genetic problems? Experts debated on Wednesday evening (Feb. 13) whether prenatal engineering should be banned in the United States.?

Humans have already genetically modified animals and crops, said Sheldon Krimsky, a philosopher at Tufts University, who argued in favor of a ban on the same for human babies. "But in the hundreds of thousands of trails that failed, we simply discarded the results of the unwanted crop or animal."

Unknown consequences

Is this a model that society wants to apply to humans, making pinpoint genetic modifications, only to "discard the results when they don't work out?" Krimsky asked during an Intelligence Squared Debate held in Manhattan. He added that assuming no mistakes will occur would be sheer hubris.

He and fellow ban proponent Lord Robert Winston, a professor of science and society and a fertility expert at Imperial College in London, focused on the uncertainty associated with the genetic underpinnings of traits. The two also addressed the consequences of manipulating genes. [5 Myths About Fertility Treatments]

"Even [for] height, one of the most heritable traits known, scientists have found at least 50 genes that account for only 2 to 3 percent of the variance in the samples," Krimsky said. "If you want a tall child, marry tall."

Mother Nature doesn?t care

Meanwhile, their opponents, who opposed the ban, talked of empowering parents to give their children a healthy life, even if it meant giving their offspring traits they themselves could not pass down.

Lee Silver, a professor of molecular biology and public policy at Princeton University, urged the audience members to look at someone sitting next to them.

"That person and you differ at over 1 million locations in your DNA [deoxyribonucleic acid]. Most [of these variations] don't do anything," Silver said. "[But] even if you are a healthy adult, 100 [of these] can cause deadly childhood disease in your children or grandchildren."

"Mother Nature is a metaphor," he continued. "And it is a bad metaphor, because in reality inheritance is a game of craps ? It won't have to be that way in the future."?

His fellow ban opponent, Nita Farahany, a professor of law and of genome sciences and policy at Duke University, attacked the idea that uncertainty should prevent the use of the technology, pointing out that reproduction, completely unaided by technology, involves much uncertainty.

"We are not going to ban natural sex," Farahany said.

Already possible

A significant portion of the debate focused on a particular technology known as mitochondrial transfer. While the majority of DNA resides in a cell's nucleus, a small amount is contained in the cell's energy factories, called mitochondria. This mitochondrial DNA is passed from mother to child. In rare cases, women have mitochondrial defects they can pass down to their children, causing devastating problems or even death.

Mitochondrial transfer can replace such defective mitochondrial DNA with that from a donor, allowing affected mothers to avoid passing these defects on to their children, who then carry genetic material from three parents (the father and two mothers, including the donor).

Opponents of a ban argued it would prevent women with mitochondrial disorders from having healthy children of their own.

"I am not here to defend every type of genetic engineering. I don't think we are ready as a society to embrace it all," Farahany said.

Rather than an outright ban, she and Silver argued for a middle ground, which would allow for certain procedures once they had been shown to be safe and effective. An emerging scientific consensus says mitochondrial transfer would fit into this category, she said.

Winston disagreed.

"We know fiddling with mitochondrial DNA may make a massive difference to what happens to nuclear DNA. ? Abnormal children have been born as result of mitochondrial transfer," he said. "I think, in preventing one genetic disease, you are likely to cause another genetic disease." [The 10 Most Mysterious Diseases]

Society should instead focus on the enormous importance of environmental influences in health, Winston said. "What we should be trying to do, rather than risk making abnormal babies, is to improve the environment so the DNA functions in the best possible ways."

Neither Farahany nor Silver argued in favor of allowing parents to modify their children to ensure other traits that are less medically necessary, but nevertheless desirable, such as higher intelligence or blue eyes.

"What I think parents care about most is promoting the health of their children," Silver said.

Leading to eugenics?

Both sides referred to the specter of eugenics, an idea embraced by the Nazis, which holds that selective breeding can be used to improve the human race.

Winston and Krimsky pointed out that genetically modifying children to choose desirable traits evoked this approach. Meanwhile, Farahany noted that some of the worst abuses of government in recent history involved attempts to control reproduction. How would a ban on the genetic modification of children be enforced, she asked, would all babies be forcibly tested???

An audience votedeclared the opponents of the ban the winners.

Willis' new 'Die Hard' scores with $25M debut

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Bruce Willis remains a die-hard at the box office.

Willis' action sequel "A Good Day to Die Hard" debuted as the weekend's top draw with a $25 million debut from Friday to Sunday. The 20th Century Fox release raised its domestic total to $33.2 million since opening Thursday for Valentine's Day to get a jump on the long President's Day weekend.

The movie comes 25 years after the original "Die Hard" and six years after "Live Free or Die Hard," the hit that resurrected the franchise centered on Willis' relentless New York City cop John McClane.

The previous weekend's No. 1 movie, Universal's comedy "Identity Thief" starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, was a close second with $23.4 million to lift its haul to $70.7 million.

Debuting at No. 3 with $21.4 million was Relativity Media's romance "Safe Haven," starring Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel in an adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel about a woman who flees her abusive husband and takes up with a sensitive widower. Since opening on Valentine's Day, "Safe Haven" has taken in $30.3 million.

The Weinstein Co. animated tale "Escape from Planet Earth" opened at No. 4 with $16.1 million. With a voice cast that includes Brendan Fraser, Jessica Alba, Sarah Jessica Parker and Rob Corddry, the movie follows the adventures of aliens captured by the U.S. military.

Making a weak debut at No. 6 was the Warner Bros. teen fantasy "Beautiful Creatures," which pulled in $7.5 million for the weekend and $10 million since opening Thursday. The movie is based on the first in the best-selling series about a Southern misfit (Alden Ehrenreich) who falls under the spell of a teen witch (Alice Englert).

"A Good Day to Die Hard" did solid business despite bad reviews for the latest installment, which sends Willis' McClane to Moscow in search of his estranged son, an undercover spy who winds up teaming with the old man against Russian bad guys.

The movie's success follows notable flops from two other holdovers of the 1980s action scene, Sylvester Stallone with "Bullet to the Head" and Arnold Schwarzenegger with "The Last Stand."

"There's still life left in the 'Die Hard' franchise. Given the fact that pretty much every other R-rated action movie that's come out this year has completely fallen flat, this is a pretty good showing," said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. Willis is "one of the old-guard action stars who still has a solid career going, whereas a lot of these aging action heroes, unless they're in an ensemble cast, they're not able to draw audiences the way they used to."

Overall Hollywood business remained slow, with revenues off for the fourth-straight weekend compared to the same period last year. Domestic business from Friday to Sunday totaled $141 million, down 9.4 percent from the same weekend a year ago, when "Safe House" and "The Vow" led the way with about $23 million each.

A bright spot this year has been strong business for top Academy Awards contenders leading up to next Sunday's Oscars. The weekend's top-20 films included eight of the nine best-picture nominees, seven of which have either topped $100 million domestically or are close.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are included. Final domestic figures will be released Tuesday.

1. "A Good Day to Die Hard," $25 million ($61.5 million international).

2. "Identity Thief," $23.4 million ($180,000 international).

3. "Safe Haven," $21.4 million ($2.6 million international).

4. "Escape from Planet Earth," $16.1 million.

5. "Warm Bodies," $9 million ($4.9 million international).

6. "Beautiful Creatures," $7.5 million ($5.4 million international).

7. "Side Effects," $6.3 million.

8. "Silver Linings Playbook," $6.1 million ($6.5 million international).

9. "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters," $3.5 million ($9.5 million international).

10. "Zero Dark Thirty," $3.1 million ($2.9 million international).

___

Estimated weekend ticket sales at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada) for films distributed overseas by Hollywood studios, according to Rentrak:

1. "A Good Day to Die Hard," $61.5 million.

2. "Django Unchained," $13.7 million.

3. "Wreck-It Ralph," $11.5 million.

4. "Les Miserables," $10 million.

5. "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters," $9.5 million.

6. "Miracle in Cell. No. 7," $8.8 million.

7. "Flight," $7 million.

8. "Lincoln," $6.6 million.

9. "Silver Linings Playbook," $6.5 million.

10. "Jack Reacher," $5.7 million.

Spy who killed himself may have revealed Israeli secrets

CANBERRA (Reuters) - A suspected Mossad agent who died in an Israeli jail in 2010 was arrested by his spymasters who believed he may have told Australian intelligence about his work with the Israeli spy agency, Australian media reported on Monday.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp said dual Australian-Israeli citizen Ben Zygier, 34, had met officers from Australia's domestic spy agency ASIO and had given details of a number of Mossad operations.

Quoting undefined sources, the ABC, which broke the initial story about Zygier's secret arrest and death in prison, said on one of his four trips to Australia, Zygier had also applied for a work visa to Italy.

But Mossad became concerned when it discovered Zygier had contact with the Australian spy agency, the ABC reported, adding it was worried he might pass on information about a major operation planned for Italy.

It said Zygier was one of three Australians who changed their names several times and took out new Australian passports for travel in the Middle East and Europe for their work with Mossad.

The closely guarded case has raised questions in Australia and Israel about the suspected use by Mossad of dual Australian-Israeli nationals.

Israeli lawmakers on Sunday announced plans to investigate Zygier's death, which a judge has ruled was suicide. Australia's Foreign Minister, Bob Carr, has initiated an inquiry into his department's handling of the case.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday sought to reduce media attention on the case and said he "absolutely trusts" Israel's security services and what he described as the independent legal monitoring system under which they operated.

Australia's Attorney-General, Mark Dreyfus, who is in charge of ASIO, on Monday said he would not comment on intelligence matters or suggestions ASIO had exposed Zygier's identity.

He also said he saw no need for a review of how the intelligence agencies handled the case.

"I haven't seen any need either, for any such review to take place within the Attorney General's Department," he told reporters.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama teed it up with Tiger Woods on Sunday.

The White House confirmed that the President and the world's most famous golfer played a round at a secluded, exclusive yacht and golf club on Florida's Treasure Coast.

Once the sport's dominant player before his career was sidetracked by scandal, Woods joined Obama at the Floridian, where Obama is spending the long Presidents Day weekend. The two had met before, but Sunday was the first time they played together.

The White House, which has promised to be the most open and transparent in history, has prohibited any media coverage of Obama's golf outing.

The foursome also included Jim Crane, a Houston businessman who owns the Floridian and baseball's Houston Astros, and outgoing U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, a former mayor of Dallas, said White House spokesman Josh Earnest. Crane and Kirk also were part of Obama's foursome on Saturday, the White House said.

Obama, an avid golfer, also received some instruction Saturday and played a few holes with Butch Harmon, Woods' former swing coach.

Initial word that the First Duffer would play a round with the world's No. 2 player didn't come from the White House, but instead came from veteran golf journalist Tim Rosaforte, who announced it on Twitter. Rosaforte's late-morning tweet said: "The president is arriving at the Floridian range. Awaiting is Tiger Woods and club owner Jim Crane. Historic day in golf. Their first round."

White House confirmation of Woods' participation came about two hours later, following multiple appeals from traveling White House reporters.

Golf Digest reported on its website that Obama spent eight hours Saturday with Harmon, playing 27 holes and hitting balls in Harmon's studio, and then managed to coordinate Sunday's round with Woods. The report said the original plan called for Obama and Woods, a Florida resident, to play at Woods' home club ? The Medalist Golf Club, a half-hour away in Hobe Sound. But they eventually opted for the Floridian.

Woods departed Sunday after the first 18 holes, with Obama staying on to play another nine, the report said.

"Just to see the interaction between the two on the range was pretty neat," Harmon told Golf Digest. "The President said to Tiger: 'The last tournament you played was fun to watch. It's good to see you play well again.' You could tell he meant it. It just wasn't a throw it out compliment."

It seems Obama and Woods ? the first black men at the top of their respective fields ? have spent the past few years inching toward Sunday's meeting on the fairway.

They met in January 2009, during Obama's inauguration in Washington. Four months later, in April, Woods visited the White House and Obama received him in the Oval Office.

Woods' personal life imploded later in 2009 after revelations that he had engaged in multiple extramarital affairs, leading to divorce. He followed with a public apology and announced he was taking an indefinite break from golf. Shortly after Woods announced he was coming out of seclusion, Obama said in an interview with Fox News Channel that Woods will still be a "terrific" golfer despite his personal issues.

After returning to the sport, Woods went two years without winning, but his game is back on track and he currently is ranked No. 2 in the world. Woods won the last tournament he played, three weeks ago in San Diego.

The White House made clear from the start of Obama's trip that there would be no coverage of him because he would be on vacation with no plans to leave the club, which remained open to members and their guests.

It arranged for the pool of reporters who traveled with Obama to bunk at a Holiday Inn about a 20-minute drive away in Port St. Lucie. Whenever the reporters were brought to the Floridian on the off chance that Obama might leave the property, they were taken no further than a maintenance shed beyond the club gates but on the edge of the grounds.

The presence at the Floridian of a professional journalist who tweeted about Obama's game as he was playing, while White House reporters essentially were locked out, brought a sharp response from Ed Henry, the Fox News Channel correspondent who also is president of the White House Correspondents' Association.

"A broad cross section of our members from print, radio, online and TV have today expressed extreme frustration to me about having absolutely no access to the president of the United States this entire weekend," Henry said in a statement. "There is a very simple but important principle we will continue to fight for today and in the days ahead: transparency."

In response, Earnest, the White House spokesman said: "The press access granted by the White House today is entirely consistent with the press access offered for previous presidential golf outings. It's also consistent with the press access promised to the White House Press Corps prior to arrival in Florida on Friday evening."

Previous administrations have allowed brief news media coverage at either the beginning or the end of presidential golf games. Obama's policy generally is no coverage at all, but exceptions were made for separate outings he had in 2011 with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and former President Bill Clinton.

Golf Channel said Rosaforte is a member of the Floridian who sent his tweets from the clubhouse. Rosaforte did not have access to the course or to Obama, the network said.

Obama is in Florida while his wife and daughters are on an annual ski vacation out West. He was due to arrive back in Washington on Monday night.
