Can iWork on the iPad really compare to a Mac?

Apple offers versions of its iWork suite (Pages, Keynote, Numbers) for both the Mac OS and iOS platforms, and given that the new school year is right around the corner, students might be weighing the options for creating and managing projects using either iPads or Macs.

While having been a fan of Apple's iWork suite in OS X since its debut and enjoy having the apps available for other platforms, I have been somewhat skeptical of using the iPad or iPhone to write a full report, a formatted resume, or managing calculations in a spreadsheet. Being a touch-only device, I've considered the iPad in large part as a viewing tool where you can look up information and browse through it, rather than buckling down and creating intricate and detailed content, especially with regard to office-related tasks. While Apple's touch-based input panels in iOS have made entering strings of text relatively easy, and along with gestures it provides a unique approach to drawing and arranging objects in applications, the question does arise as to whether this approach is adequate for more-detailed work such as word processing, presentations, and spreadsheets.

Overall the differences between Pages, Numbers, and Keynote on both platforms is in the capabilities of the two platforms, and herein lies the main determination of what will suit the end user's needs. When using iWork on the iPad, for the most part the iOS' limitations are a bit of a drawback when it comes to many office-related tasks, but Apple does make the best of these and offers at least usable approaches.

Platform differences

While it is easy to simply focus on the individual program when looking at word-processing and spreadsheet management, the computing environment as a whole does play a very important role, and there are three significant drawbacks to the iOS platform for these purposes.

Many times when composing documents you may have other programs open that you need to quickly reference, so multitasking capabilities are almost a requirement, and here is where iOS hits its first major hurdle. Since iOS apps are full-screen, you cannot have a Web browser and file browser open on the same screen to help organize ideas and content with the immediacy of a simple glance. You also cannot have multiple documents open in the same iWork application, so when putting together complex ideas you must constantly switch from one full-screen view to the next, and this can be a bit tiresome.

iOS Keyboard input options

iOS does offer multiple keyboards for access to different characters, but it would be nice to have these and other characters more readily available.

(Credit: Screenshot by Topher Kessler/CNET)

The second limitation is input options. These days people are quite proficient at touch-typing, and Apple provides full keyboard layouts and split layouts that may be comfortable for some and will largely suffice for entering text; however, there are two missing features that do affect office-related tasks: quick cursor management and access to special characters.

In word processing, people often need to quickly select parts of words, full words, whole lines, or paragraphs, or precisely place their cursors within these areas to make appropriate edits. While Apple's touch-based inputs can do this, it takes extra steps to tap-select items, and then drag the selection limits, and these options pale in comparison to the precision and speed of either a mouse or primarily arrow keys combined with modifiers (Shift, Command, Control, etc.). One way for Apple to implement this would be to have an additional input panel containing arrow and modifier buttons to allow quick cursor management for selecting and moving items, but this is currently not available.

With regard to special characters, while the iOS key trays provide access to most language-specific characters, it does not have default easy access to special characters including, for instance, a degree symbol and math symbols, among others. Unicode fonts offer a plethora of math, currency, arrow, music, and other technical symbols that can be exceptionally useful in word processing. While these are available in OS X using the system-wide Character Viewer panel, this option is limited in iOS. You can add new international keyboards in the iOS preferences that may include some of these desired characters, but this is not the same as a full character palette and also sometimes requires activating multiple keyboards to have the desired characters.

The last hurdle in iOS is its document management options. Apple's integration of iCloud makes synchronization of changes between devices a breeze; however, whether you use iCloud or store documents locally, Apple allows you to only organize documents in folders that are one level deep. If you are managing a few documents then this organization can be useful, but in environments like schools where one might have multiple classes each with different projects, the inability to create subfolders for these projects might result in a bit of a cluttered organization.

I contacted Apple regarding some of these limitations asking for alternative approaches and wondering about the potential for improving them, but Apple understandably could not comment on future directions of the program.

Despite these inherent limitations to the iOS platform, Apple has found ways to make Pages, Keynote, and Numbers on iOS be useful and in some cases meet or even surpass the capabilities of their Mac counterparts.

Pages

Pages in iOS

Apple's touch-based text management options will work, but they are a bit cumbersome in comparison to using modifier keys with arrows.

(Credit: Screenshot by Topher Kessler/CNET)

Pages in iOS is best described as an enhanced version of TextEdit for OS X. It offers a simple approach to the page layout and quick options for adjusting the font, font size, text style, justification, and indentations. As with other iWork on iOS programs, Pages has object management buttons at the top-right of the program where you can access formatting details for text like lists, styles, and columns. These options are also contextual, so if you select an image it will provide details like rotation, shadows, and outlines.

As a result, when managing the visual aspects of a Pages document, the iPad is a nice tool to have; however, the lack of a direct cursor management option like arrow keys means text management itself is not as fast as can be done on a Mac. With practice you can get relatively speedy at selecting and moving text around, but for those used to a keyboard, the arrow keys and combinations of modifiers such as the Shift, Command, and Option keys are invaluable options when organizing ideas and document structure.

Overall, while Pages on iOS is fun and can be used with iCloud to view and add basic edits to Pages documents created elsewhere, for true word-processing speed and detailed text organization, your best bet is to primarily use Pages on the Mac OS.

Keynote

Keynote in iOS

Keynote in iOS encourages a more visual approach to presentations.

(Credit: Screenshot by Topher Kessler/CNET)

When it comes to making presentations, unlike Pages where the iOS input options can be a burden to the workflow, presentation creation may benefit from the touch-based input. Even though as with Pages the lack of arrow key inputs makes managing text and aligning objects a bit harder to do, one thing it does do is dissuade people from resorting to presentations of endless bullet points. The touch-based input almost encourages you to make more-visual presentations by drawing objects and arranging graphs and pictures instead of resorting to text fields.

One issue with Keynote that is more of a desired enhancement than a drawback is its lack of ability to control or run presentations on a nearby Mac, and instead requires you to either connect the iPad to an AirPlay device, use a video adapter, or transfer the presentation to a Mac that is attached to a projector. Unfortunately in many cases, the latter is the only available option (especially in schools), and having a Bonjour-like feature where Keynote on iOS could detect a Mac running Keynote and then request to use it for running a presentation (similar to how one can request Screen Sharing in iChat or Messages), would make the iPad far more useful for running presentations rather than simply creating them.

Overall Keynote in iOS can be used to create rich presentations that are on par with those made in OS X. While the lack of multitasking prevents the use of some shortcuts like drag and drop, the program can be used very well either independently or in conjunction with Keynote on the Mac OS to make well-done presentations. The main benefit it brings to the table is the touch-based input opening doors to making richer and more attractive presentations rather than just typing in text.

Numbers

Numbers in iOS

Multitouch input for Numbers results in a very pleasant and intuitive spreadsheet experience, especially when using Apple's specialized input palette.

(Credit: Screenshot by Topher Kesslet/CNET)

The last program in the iWork suite is Numbers, and while the previous two programs either worked well or had some limitations with the touch-based input, Numbers on iOS came as a surprise in that it was an amazing program to use on the iPad. Spreadsheets for the most part do not require much (if any) text management and instead content is managed through selecting cells, entering data, and managing formulas. For these purposes the touch-based input in iOS seemed to excel and truly fit the workflow.

Data in spreadsheets is inherently object-based, either as whole tables or as individual cells within them, and as such most tasks for spreadsheets are inherently built around selecting these objects and apply changes to them. In Numbers, creating a table is as easy as tapping a button and then resizing it accordingly, and then double-tapping a cell brings up a unique entry panel, which, like a fancy calculator, offers options for entering data as text, time, general numbers, or as functions.

From this panel, entering text or assembling the desired calculations by tapping and dragging is exceptionally simple, intuitive, and fits the classic paradigm of using a spreadsheet.

Oddly, unlike Pages and Keynote, Apple's inclusion of this unique input panel is what makes Numbers flow so nicely. Had Apple relied solely on the standard input panels as it does for Pages and Keynote then managing data entry in the spreadsheets would be as cumbersome as managing text. However, this panel offers quick access to the functions needed to manage data in the spreadsheet. Two of the options in this panel are a couple of "Next" buttons that move the spreadsheet cell focus to the right or down to a new line, very similar to what arrow key inputs in iOS might provide, and outline how well Pages, Keynote, and perhaps iOS in general would benefit from them.

Forms in Numbers for iOS

The Forms feature in Numbers for iOS is especially useful, and can easily interface with most tables to supply a quick way to enter data in your spreadsheet. Unfortunately this feature is not supported in OS X.

(Credit: Screenshot by Topher Kessler/CNET)

Even though creating tables and entering data is simple and straightforward, Numbers for iOS does have one feature that stands out in its utility: its entry forms for managing spreadsheet data. People often use spreadsheets to manage database-like information such as a row representing a person and columns detailing aspects about that person such as name, age, height, gender, and other items. While you can enter this data in the standard spreadsheet view, this approach can be a bit of a burden. To tackle this, Apple has introduced a new Forms view where you can select a table and create a quick entry form for it that appears in a separate sheet tab and contains fields for the various columns in your table.

Using Forms, you can essentially turn Numbers for iOS into a simple database and greatly facilitate data entry into your spreadsheet.

Unfortunately, even though this feature is quite nice to have, it is not currently supported in Numbers for OS X. Therefore, if you share your Numbers document or synchronize it using iCloud to a Mac, opening it will strip away the form from the document. While this will not result in lost data, and while it is easy enough to re-create the form and continue your data entry, this may be frustrating to deal with if you use both platforms.

Despite this one drawback when used with Numbers for OS X, Numbers for iOS is a great option and really suites the touch-based input of the iPad. It also demonstrates how both Pages and Keynote would benefit from more unique input panels that are tweaked for word processing rather than simply entering lines of text.

The bottom line

The decision for which of Apple's iWork offerings are best comes down to determining which computing environment suits you best. Each program on its respective platform will open the others' documents and the overall capabilities of each are quite similar, so the main difference lies in which input and multitasking approach is best for you. In my opinion, there is room for improvement for text management in iOS, and the platform's lack of multidocument views on the same screen can be a frustration for true office work, but despite these details, the iWork suite on iOS at least complements iWork in OS X.

Ultimately, even though iOS has its drawbacks, Pages will give you a means for viewing your work on the go and creating basic edits, but is limited by iOS' approach to multitasking. Likewise, Keynote will allow you to work on existing presentations made on a Mac, or create new ones, and while it also would benefit from enhanced text management features, it inherently encourages a more visual approach to presentations. These two programs will have their places in various work environments, but the real star in the suite is Numbers, which has the potential to be exceptionally useful for entering data and performing calculations on it in a variety of different situations.

Pages, Keynote, and Numbers can be purchased for $19.99 each from the Mac App Store in OS X, or for $9.99 each in the App Store on iOS devices.

Movie review: 'Awakening' casts a smart, spooky spell | The Salt ...

Rebecca Hall plays a debunker of the supernatural who discovers something strange happening in a boarding school, in the suspense thriller "The Awakening." Courtesy Cohen Media Group

"The Awakening" works as a moody ghost story thanks to strong performances and a creepily brooding atmosphere.

In England just after World War I, Florence Cathcart (Rebecca Hall) has a reputation as a professional debunker of the supernatural, busting seances for their parlor trickery. Then she meets Robert Mallory (Dominic West), who teaches at a remote boarding school where a boy recently died, apparently frightened to death by a ghost.

?The Awakening?

Opens Friday, Aug. 31, at the Cinemark 24 (Jordan Landing); rated R for some violence and sexuality/nudity; 107 minutes. For more movie reviews, visit nowsaltlake.com/movies.

Florence sets up her tools and measuring devices, certain that it?s a human hoaxster she?s after. But strange things begin happening that have Florence second-guessing her skepticism and questioning her sanity.

Director Nick Murphy (co-writing with Stephen Volk) sets up a spooky haunted-house thriller with some smart twists that ratchet up the tension skillfully. The key, though, is Hall ("The Town," "Vicky Christina Barcelona"), who captures Florence?s flinty intelligence and the vulnerability that emerges as she slowly discovers the school?s dark secrets.

Denon launches MC2000 DJ controller, invites prospective spinners to 'own the party'

Load and start track A. Load, and start track B on the next down beat. Adjust pitch / speed of track B to keep in time with track A. Now you know the very basics of DJing, you might want some hardware to practice it on. Fortunately, for you beginners, Denon has just released the MC2000 DJ controller. An entry-level device that should get you (and your tracks) up to speed. Along with the plug and play USB device, you'll get a copy of Serato's DJ Intro mixing software (for which it was specifically designed) to get you started. If that's not for you, or perhaps you've already earned your spinning stripes, and are looking for something compact, no problem -- full MIDI output means this can work with other software options too. There's a basic two-channel mixer snug between the pair o'wheels, and all the usual buttons for hot-cues and loops etc. As is fast becoming standard, the audio interface is built-in, making the hook-up at parties and gigs a much simpler -- and less computer-bothering -- affair. If has ticked your boxes, it'll be available from October, commanding an estimated £269 / €325 / $299 out of your record budget when it does so. In the meantime you can cue-up the promo video after the break.

LeAnn Rimes sues over phone call; enters treatment

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? LeAnn Rimes sued two women she claims illegally recorded a phone conversation with her and posted snippets online, one day after she sought professional help for anxiety and stress.

Rimes sued Kimberly Smiley and her adult daughter Lexi on Thursday, seeking more than $25,000 in damages for recording a March phone conversation that ended up online on websites bashing the country singer.

Kimberly Smiley denied she posted the recording, saying she shared it with online acquaintances, one of whom played it for the ex-wife of Rimes' husband, Eddie Cibrian. "The whole thing is just ridiculous," she said. "It's just a celebrity who's too full of herself."

The invasion of privacy lawsuit came one day after Rimes, 30, entered an in-patient treatment facility in what her publicist Marcel Pariseau describes an attempt to "learn and develop coping mechanisms."

Pariseau says Rimes isn't seeking treatment for an eating disorder or substance abuse, adding that "while privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."

The recorded phone call occurred because a friend of Rimes connected the singer and Smiley to try to stop some negative online postings, according to the lawsuit and an interview with Smiley.

It is illegal in California for a party to record a phone call without the other person's knowledge.

"The making of the unauthorized recording and the posting of it and edited excerpts of it on various websites have resulted in a public and damaging depiction of Ms. Rimes, have harmed her reputation and personal relationships, and have caused her emotional distress," the lawsuit states.

Rimes and Cibrian were married in April 2011 and their relationship has remained a subject of tabloid fascination, due in part to them being married to other people when it started.

Kimberly Smiley, who is a schoolteacher in Northern California, said she has been on the receiving end of bullying from Rimes' supporters and has kept her Twitter and a YouTube post of the call on private settings. She said she shared the call with others but did not sell the recording, which she said her daughter made because of some "outrageous" things the singer was saying.

"I truly think this is a PR attempt to get people to think she's been victimized," she said.

Rimes' lawsuit states the singer is entitled to triple her actual damages if she wins at trial, and she is also seeking punitive damages and an order blocking the recording from being distributed further. Smiley questioned how much Rimes would be able to actually collect and said she was embarrassed to be involved in the dustup.

Rimes is keeping her weekend tour commitments through September during breaks from treatment.

New mums could face debt problems | Chiltern Debt Management

According to figures, almost three in ten new mums will face debt problems while they are on maternity leave from their work.

The information released has revealed that new mothers will rack up an average debt of ?2,500, with just a quarter feeling as though they are financially secure when it comes to motherhood.

The views on 1,008 new mums were taken into consideration by an online poll carried out by EasyInsites for uSwitch.com.

The poll found that 10% ? or one in ten ? were forced to borrow from their close friends and family, with 14% choosing loans, overdrafts and credit cards to ease the financial burden put upon them.

Ann Robinson, uSwitch.com?s director of consumer policy, said: ?Sadly very few mums have the luxury of being able to stay at home for the whole of their maternity leave and even fewer have the choice to be a stay at home mum.

?It?s clear more needs to be done by the government to help families cope with the financial burden of parenthood, but in the meantime families can help their situation by reviewing household budgets and looking at where they can cut costs to save a bit of extra cash.?

Empire State Building shooter didn't expect to return home

Aug 26, 2012 5:28pm

abc empire state police surveillance jt 120825 wblog Empire State Building Shooter Didnt Expect to Return Home After Shooting

(ABC News)

A search of the apartment of the gunman killed by police outside the Empire State Building showed the shooter apparently had no intention of returning home after shooting his former co-worker.

Police found an envelope with his keys left behind for his landlord, leading investigators to believe he did not expect to be back.

Jeffrey Johnson was killed by police Friday in midtown Manhattan, after killing a former co-worker on the street and raising his .45-calibre semi-automatic gun at police officers. Although he did not get off any shots, officers fired 16 shots, killing Johnson, and wounding nine bystanders.

Witnesses told ABC News that police shouted to Johnson to stop before the shooting began.

Despite initial reports on social media of a mass shooting spree, all nine bystanders were hit by police gunfire.

None of the bystanders, who were hit by bullets or shrapnel, were seriously injured. It isn?t that unusual for bystanders to get caught in crossfire between police and a suspect.

Even on a crowded street, like the one outside the Empire State Building, police officers are trained to shoot if they have a clear shot at somebody they consider to be a threat.

Steve Kardian, a former Westchester police officer, told ABC News it?s a matter of public safety.

?If he has to be neutralized in a crowd, it is better to take him out than to risk him shooting the officers and shooting other people in the vicinity,? Kardian said.

In cases such as this, where bystanders were injured by police bullets, the victims often sue the police department or the city. Some win large settlements, but if the police can show the suspect they shot posed a threat, courts may rule in favor of the police and grant them immunity for liability.

In this case, police could argue that a man pointing a loaded gun at police, as surveillance video shows Johnson did, is certainly such a threat.

Johnson had been in a long-standing dispute with Steven Ercolino, an employee at Hazan Imports Corp., where Johnson used to work. His employment there ended bitterly, and the two men had filed complaints against each other.

Reshuffled Republican convention set to proceed on Tuesday

By Michael O'Brien, NBC News

TAMPA, Fla. -- Republicans will convene their convention on Tuesday, squeezing their canceled Monday programming into the span of three days.

Convention organizers seemed not to forsee any additional delays to the convention, though they said they would continue to monitor an impending hurricane.

The new schedule maintains the primetime schedule, with a lineup of Ann Romney and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie speaking on Tuesday evening, former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan on Wednesday, and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Mitt Romney on Thursday.

Romney strategist Russ Schriefer wouldn't fully rule out the possibility, though, of adding a Friday session to the convention if inclement conditions force further postponement of convention activities.

"We are planning on Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday," he said. "It's a hypothetical question"

Convention organizers argued that Monday's planned theme -- "We Can Do Better" -- could be weaved into the remaining three days of the convention as it's currently scheduled. Some speeches will be shortened to accommodate for the changes.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus will call the convention to order on Monday, as had been planned, but will shortly thereafter gavel the convention into recess. Organizers called this a "very, very brief session -- probably no more than five minutes," and expressed doubts about whether many, if any, delegates would attend.

The roll call vote to formally nominate Romney for president is scheduled for Tuesday.

UN: Syrian refugees top 200,000 as exodus grows

AP Photo / Muhammed Muheisen

An elderly man who fled his home due to fighting between the forces of President Bashar Assad and rebels takes refuge at the Bab Al-Salameh border crossing in hopes of entering one of the refugee camps in Turkey, near the Syrian town of Azaz, on Thursday.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

More than 200,000 Syrians have poured into neighboring countries during the conflict, already surpassing the projection of 185,000 set out by the U.N. refugee agency for the end of this year.

Meanwhile, more than 3,500 people fleeing violence in Syria entered Turkey over the past 24 hours, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate said Friday, one of the highest daily refugee flows since the start of the uprising last year.

The total of fleeing Syrians reflects an increase of some 30,000 in the past week alone to Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan, but also takes into account a change in the way the agency counts those in Jordan, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said.

UN: Syrian refugees top 200,000 as exodus grows

"We are now at a much higher level of 202,512 refugees in the surrounding region," Adrian Edwards told a news briefing in a briefing.

As fighting continues in Syria, observers blame government airstrikes for mounting casualties which activists now say top 20,000. NBC News' John Ray reports.

"In Jordan, a record 2,200 people crossed the border overnight and were received at Za'atri camp in the north," he said.

Edwards, referring to Lebanon where 51,000 Syrian refugees are now registered, said: "The deteriorating security situation in Lebanon is hampering our work to help refugees fleeing Syria's conflict, though operations are continuing."?

Town hammered
The news came after reports that troops and tanks swept into a town near capital Damascus in an assault aimed at crushing opposition to President Bashar Assad in Syria's increasingly bloody civil war.?

Artillery and helicopters hammered the Sunni Muslim town of Daraya on Thursday, killing 25 people and wounding 200 over the previous 48 hours, opposition sources told Reuters. Soldiers moved in and raided houses.?

As civil war rages on in Syria, there is growing concern over violence that is spreading to neighboring countries. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

"Artillery is firing from Qasioun Mountain in regular bursts of heavy barrages. I wonder what is left of the town," said one woman watching the shelling from Damascus.?

At least 100 people, including 59 civilians, died in violence across the country, according to the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Some 200 were killed on Wednesday.?

Photos: Displaced Syrians struggle to find safe shelter

An estimated 20,000 people have been killed in 18 months of unrest in Syria.?

There was little resistance as Assad's forces pushed toward the center of Daraya on the southwest edge of Damascus. Armed rebels had apparently already left.?

At least nine people die as Sunni Muslims and Alawites fight for a second day. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

"They are using mortar bombs to clear each sector. Then they enter it, while moving towards the center," said Abu Zeid, an activist speaking by phone from near Daraya.?

Assad's military had driven insurgents from most of the areas they seized in and around the capital after a bomb killed four top security officials on July 18. But rebels have crept back, regrouping without taking on the army in pitched battles.?

Tanks and troops attacked the southwest Damascus suburb of Mouadamiya on Monday and Tuesday, killing 86 people, half of them in cold blood, according to Assad's opponents.?

The battle for Aleppo: My 18 days with the Syrian rebels

It is hard to verify such assertions due to state curbs on independent media. Syrian leaders say they are fighting "armed terrorists" backed by Western and Gulf Arab nations out to topple Assad for his resistance to Israel and the United States.?

Reuters contributed to this report.

Soilse's success rates can be judged on many levels said Gerry McAleenan, "Success for Soilse participants includes getting in and completing the programme, staying away from alcohol and other drugs, avoiding reoffending and detoxing. Success for recovering addicts can also mean gaining routine and structure to their lives, improved self esteem and family and community engagement. Participants' involvement in employment, training and adult education are also key success indicators, he said. On Friday 6 July, six former Soilse service users, including a participant from the first group in 1992, will speak about their recovery journey.

The programme of events is as follows:

Wednesday July 4
Roisin Shortall Minister for State, Department of Health with responsibility for Primary Care will launch the celebrations. The theme is 'Celebration of Creativity'. Liberty Ross Not Wearing Wedding Ring, Stuns on First Red Carpet Since Rupert Sanders' Affair

No more tears!

While Robert Pattinson yukked it up with Jimmy Kimmel, the scorned woman in the Kristen Stewart-Rupert Sanders saga, Liberty Ross, hit the town for the Hollywood premiere of Lawless on Wednesday.

Looking serene and fresh-faced, the British model, 33, wore a silky green button-down shirt, skinny black pants, and black booties on her very first red carpet since her husband's affair -- but she declined to wear her wedding ring to the event, which she attended with her brother, Nine Inch Nails musician Atticus Ross.

PHOTOS: Kristen and Rupert's affair

After the screening of the film (starring Shia Labeouf and Guy Pearce) at the Arclight Theater, Ross headed to hotspot Eden for the after party -- where she and her brother stayed lowkey, chatting with Australian rocker Nick Cave and other pals.

PHOTOS: Famous women who've been cheated on

According to an observer, Ross -- whose surprise appearance was the buzz of the premiere -- spent most of the bash sipping on a drink and chatting quietly with her brother.

Together with Snow White and the Huntsman director Sanders, 41, for 15 years, Ross is mom to Skyla, 7, and Tennyson, 5. Ross learned of Sanders' July 17 fling with Stewart, 22, the week before Us Weekly's exclusive photos emerged. "She was coming to terms with it," a source told Us.

"It's too early to tell what will happen with them," the source added.

Primate of the opera: What soprano singing apes on helium reveal about the human voice

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Have you ever heard an opera singing ape? Researchers in Japan have discovered that singing gibbons use the same vocal techniques as professional soprano singers. The study, published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology, explains how recording gibbons singing under the influence of helium gas reveals a physiological similarity to human voices.

The research was led by Dr Takeshi Nishimura from the Primate Research Institute at Kyoto University, Japan. His team studied the singing of a white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar) at Fukuchiyama City Zoo, in northern Kyoto.

A gibbon's song is acoustically unique among primates, with a loud melody which can be heard over two miles away. In the wild gibbons use their songs to communicate with neighboring pairs, strangers and potential mates through impenetrable jungle where visibility is poor.

"The complexity of human speech is unique among primates as it requires varied soft sounds made by the rapid movements of vocal tracts," said Dr Nishimura. "Our speech was thought to have evolved through specific modifications in our vocal anatomy. However, we've shown how the gibbons' distinctive song uses the same vocal mechanics as soprano singers, revealing a fundamental similarity with humans."

To explore these similarities the team conducted the first acoustic investigation on non-human primates using helium gas. The gas is famous for making human voices appear high pitched by shifting the resonance frequencies of the vocal tract upwards. The gas is useful for studying animal vocal mechanisms as it increases sound velocity and resonance frequencies.

The team recorded 20 gibbon calls in normal air atmosphere, before recording 37 calls in a helium-enriched atmosphere. The resulting sounds, which are available as audio files, reveal how gibbons can consciously manipulate their vocal cords and tract to make their distinctive sound.

"The lowest frequency of harmonics is amplified in a gibbon's song when performed in normal air," said Nishimura. "However, in a helium-enriched atmosphere the tuning of the vocal cord vibration and the resonance of the vocal tract are altered as the gas causes an upward shift of the resonance frequencies."

This supports the theory that, as with humans, there is independence between the origin of the sound and the vocal tools used to manipulate it.

This shows that gibbons use the same process for producing speech as humans, whereby acoustic sound originates from the larynx and is controlled by a filter, determined by the shape of the supralaryngeal vocal tract. This manipulation forms speech and is known as the 'source-filter' process of speech production.

Singing gibbons always, and with minimal effort, adopt the complex vocal techniques which are only mastered in humans by professional soprano singers. This discovery suggests the development of complex vocal abilities in humans was not due to unique evolutionary modifications. Instead it shows that humans share the biological fundamentals of vocalization with other primates, but in speech have simply acquired another of its most sophisticated forms.

"This is the first evidence that gibbons always sing using soprano techniques, a difficult vocalization ability for humans which is only mastered by professional opera singers," concluded Nishimura. "This gives us a new appreciation of the evolution of speech in gibbons while revealing that the physiological foundation in human speech is not so unique."
