Debt crisis: live

11.36 More from JP Morgan:

Quote We expect no long-term positive impact on peripheral spreads from a resumption of SMP. This reflects several factors.

? First, we expect ECB implementation to remain half-hearted and reactive.

? Second, the impact on peripheral sovereign yields will likely be smaller this time due to the issue of private sector subordination, a point which was hammered home by the preferential treatment given to the ECB during Greek PSI.

? Third, Spain needs to significantly ramp up its issuance pace in order to cover its funding needs for the rest of the year. We estimate that Spain needs to nearly double its issuance pace going forward. These figures do not include potential funding needs due to support facilities announced for the Spanish regions.

? Fourth, secondary market selling pressure from non-domestic holders of Spanish debt will continue, as investors sell into the SMP bid due to lack of market demand elsewhere. Net, we expect these factors to outweigh the positive impact from ECB bond-buying over the long-term, especially if Spain gets downgraded to sub-investment grade later in the year, which is our base case.

11.31 Analysts at JP Morgan have also examined how much impact the ECB's bond buying programme would have if it was re-activated. Its conclusion? Not much:

Quote Since 2010, the ECB has accumulated a total portfolio of peripheral sovereign debt of around ?225bn, dominated by Italy, Greece and Spain (Exhibit 4). However, previous ECB attempts have been mainly reactive. That is, the ECB wants to defuse a crisis but also wants the fiscal authorities to ultimately bear the load. Thus, prior bouts of SMP buying have started out with a bang but tapered off significantly after 3-6 weeks. In late 2011 the ECB had to pick up the pace again when Italian and Spanish yields approached new highs; this also led to the introduction of 3Y LTROs in December.

11.08 The German government has "full confidence" in the ECB and sees no reason for legal action against the central bank.

Spokeswoman Georg Streiter was responding to comments made by German MP Joerg-Uwe Hahn this morning (see 09.21) that the government should sue the central bank over its purchases of peripheral debt.

Mr Streiter also said that the government's position on eurobonds remained unchanged, and shared debt liability was not in the country's interest.

10.49 Meanwhile, confidence across the eurozone slipped again in July, according to a monthly survey by the European Commission.

A fall in confidence across "all sectors" saw the EC's Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) for the eurozone fall to 87.9 in July (from 89.9), while the EU reading fell to 89.0 (from 90.4). This compares with a long run average of 100.

A "loss of confidence in the services sector" was the main driver of the fall in the EU, the EC said, while the euro area saw the biggest declines in industry and among consumers.

10.33 Commenting on the Italian auction, Annalisa Piazza at Newedge Strategy, said:

Quote Lower yields are good news for the Italian Tesoro and rising borrowing costs is one of the major threat for the Italian fiscal consolidation at the current juncture. However, the relatively low bid/cover ratios remain a sign that dealers are extremely suspicious on the recent tightening of EMU periphery's spreads. ECB policymakers sounded convinced that the re-activation of the SMP was needed in the near term as spiking spreads are a clear obstacle to the smooth transmission mechanism of the ECB monetary policy. However, the ECB meeting is a few days away and market participants are still reluctant on the possible outcome of the meeting and they seem to be concerned about a possible disappointment.

10.21 Italy has managed to sell medium and long term debt this morning at lower rates than at a previous auction in June.

The Treasury sold ?2.5bn of 10 year debt at average yields of 5.96pc, compared with 6.19pc at the last auction, ?2.24bn of five year debt at average rates of 5.29pc (vs. 5.84pc), and ?750m of three year debt at average yields of 4.49pc.

Demand remained steady, with around 1.3 bidders per bond on offer at the ten-year auction.

09.58 It's a week of meetings this week. Today, US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner meets German counterpart Wolfgang Schaeuble and ECB president Mario Draghi.

On Thursday, Italian PM Mario Monti will meet his Spanish counterpart Mariano Rajoy in Madrid.

In between all that, we'll get interest rate decisions on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Bank of England, ECB and Federal Reserve in America are all expected to keep interest rates on hold this week, despite calls from some economists to ease monetary policy further.

09.52 The Bank of England also said that mortgage approvals and lending slumped to its lowest level since December 2010 last month, reflecting broader economic weakness due to extra public holidays and wet weather.

09.47 The amount of money swirling around the financial system has collapsed to new lows.

The Bank of England figures showed that the UK's broad money supply, M4, shrank by 5.2pc on an annual basis in June to its lowest level since records began in 1983.

Commenting on the figures, Samuel Tombs at Capital Economics, said:

QuoteGiven our view that the euro-zone crisis is likely to intensify, thereby weakening UK banks, we continue to expect weak money and credit growth to undermine the pace of the economic recovery for some time to come.

09.29 Analysts at Societe Generale argue in a note this morning that even if the ECB was to restart its Securities Markets Programme (SMP), it would not lower peripheral borrowing costs over the long term:

QuoteRestarting the SMP purchases is another matter. The Bundesbank was never keen on the idea, yet this didn?t stop the ECB from relaunching the programme last August. Graph 1 shows that it was first launched in May 2010, then petering out, only to be restarted in August 2011 before petering out again. The bullish impetus only lasted a few days last August.

A repeat of August 2011 is possible, even if the Bundesbank drags its feet. Little does it matter to the investor who the official buyer is (EFSF or Eurosystem). Investors will just want to sell their holdings at prices perceived to be above market clearing levels compared to longer term prospects. So a buy programme will just result in a transfer of ownership. It will not have a durable impact on lower yields

But for now the threat of intervention can buy governments a little time, and contain spreads, or even push them tighter. Buying will at best be a palliative, not a game changer, though can still have a large near-term impact on markets, as August 2011 saw.

09.21 Not everyone is happy with the idea of the ECB going on a bond buying spree, and one member of Angela Merkel's junior coalition party has called on the German government to sue the central bank for hoovering up peripheral debt on the secondary market. Joerg-Uwe Hahn told Die Welt:

QuoteThe European treaties allow member states to sue the ECB [...] It's time to open the toolbox of the (EU's) Lisbon Treaty and see how one can ensure that the ECB is brought into line to focus on its original task: monetary stability.

08.52 Today's leader column in the Financial Times argues that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should ask EU leaders for a refund on its loans to the indebted country and "confine its own role to giving open and honest assessments of the ensuing rescue attempt." More from the FT:

Quote...the longer the IMF participates in a rescue it does not itself believe in, the greater the cost will be to its reputation and support outside the eurozone. Should any writedown on its lending even be proposed, it would enrage other shareholders, including the US and the big emerging economies. Its implementation would be a disaster, raising costs for other borrowers and in effect crippling the institution.

On balance, the fund was right to take the risk of getting involved in Greece. It has offered unrivalled technical competence and has tried to inject a sense of reality into the proceedings. But the risks to its reputation have now begun to outweigh the limited good it has been doing. The eurozone has money. It needs an impartial and outspoken adviser, not a co-opted fellow creditor. The IMF should look at how to extricate itself from further bankrolling the Greek rescue.

08.34 Reports that the ECB could take losses on Greek debt have gained traction over the weekend.

Intensive discussions are now reportedly under way among EU policy-makers that could see the European Central Bank and a number of central banks take a significant write-down on their Greek bonds as the price for avoiding a eurozone break-up and losing its weakest link.

08.24 Spanish and Italian borrowing costs have also continued to fall.

Yields on Spanish and Italian 10-year debt are currently at 6.66pc and 5.88pc respectively.

08.20 It was Monti and Merkel's turn this weekend to promise do everything to protect the eurozone. And so far this morning, the comments by the German chancellor and Italian PM have kept markets in the black.

The FTSE 100 is up 0.3pc, at 5,643.09, while the CAC 40 in Paris is up 0.5pc at 3,296.64 and Frankfurt's DAX is up 0.7pc at 6,734.40. The IBEX 35 in Madrid is flat, at 6,619.10.

08.12 The eurozone has "no time to lose" (sound familiar?), and leaders "must make extremely clear with all available means that we are determined to ensure the financial stability of the currency union," Jean-Claude Juncker has said.

Mr Juncker, who leads the Eurogroup of finance ministers in the 17-nation bloc, told German daily S?ddeutsche Zeitung (translation by AP):

QuoteI don't want to raise expectations, but I must say that we have arrived at a decisive point [...] the euro countries have arrived a point where we must make extremely clear with all available means that we are determined to ensure the financial stability of the currency union.

I have no doubt that we will implement the decisions of the last summit [...] It still has to be decided what exactly we will do when. That depends on the developments of the coming days and how fast we have to react [...] and we will, as Draghi says, see results.

08.03 We wake to news this morning that the Spanish economy contracted by 0.4pc in the second quarter. This follows a 0.3pc contraction in the previous quarter. On an annual basis, the economy contracted by 1pc.

The figures affirm the Bank of Spain's forecasts earlier this month.

08.00 Good morning and welcome back to our live coverage of the European debt crisis.

Martin Sheen To Join 'Anger Management' If FX Sitcom Gets 90-Episode Pickup

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. ? Charlie Sheen says he's not insane anymore.

Instead, these are good days for the "Anger Management" star, he declares, with his FX sitcom half-way through its initial 10-episode run and poised to get an order for 90 more.

Sheen told reporters Saturday that the prospect of continuing is as "exciting as hell," and added cheerily, "I don't think 90's gonna be enough."

With the expected pickup, FX plans to bring aboard Sheen's dad, Martin Sheen, as a regular cast member. He will play the father of Charlie Goodson, the anger-management therapist played by Charlie Sheen. The veteran movie actor, who also played President Jed Bartlet on the drama series "The West Wing," is guest-starring on an "Anger Management" episode that airs Aug. 16.

"I think that was the best episode we did," his son said.

Adding Sheen pere to the series "will give an extra dimension and make it a multi-generational family show," said FX boss John Landgraf in making the announcement.

The production schedule would call for filming a total of 100 episodes in just two years. This kind of cost-saving routine means no time for rehearsals, said executive producer Bruce Helford.

"The actors get the lines, we see the scene, the writers make changes, the actors go to makeup, cameras are blocked, we come back together and shoot the scene," he explained.

At first, the cast members "felt like basically they were on the ledge. But by the third episode, everyone found the characters to the point that the writers were following their lead," Helford said.

"I feel like how we started, we just scratched the surface ? barely," said Sheen, who arrived for his appearance at the Television Critics Association session clad in Bermuda shorts, a long-sleeve shirt and loafers without socks.

He likened his tumultuous departure from "Two and a Half Men" and the stormy aftermath last year to a dream he couldn't wake up from. Or like "a train I couldn't get off of, except that I was the conductor," he added, speaking in quick bursts and fidgeting in his chair.

He said he learned a lot from that period, including "stick to what you know." Referring to his disastrous "My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not an Option" tour in spring 2011, he got laughs from the group when he advised, "Don't go on the road with a one-man show in 21 cities without an act. "

"I'm not insane anymore," he summed up.

What's different now from Sheen's angry stretch on "Men," characterized by his much-publicized clashes with series creator Chuck Lorre?

Helford weighed in with a theory. On "Men," he ventured, "Charlie didn't really have a voice with creative input. It wasn't built that way."

On "Anger Management," Helford said he's forged a partnership with his star.

"We built this together," he said. "And when Charlie's on the stage, that's his stage. When you feel that, your creative juices are flowing, everything is better for you, because you have a say in what you're doing.

"When you don't control your destiny, things get screwed up in your head," he said as Sheen nodded.

On "Anger Management," Charlie Goodson thrives on chaos. Sheen was asked if he does, too, or if he longs for a simpler life.

"I can wish every minute for a simple life. It's not gonna happen," Sheen replied. "But I don't really look at it as chaos. I look at it as challenges."

Romney builds ties in Israel, woos voters at home

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will confront some of the world's most difficult peace and security challenges on Sunday as he looks to demonstrate to Jewish and evangelical voters back home that he's a better friend to Israel than Democratic President Barack Obama.

Romney faces high stakes as he begins a series of talks with top Israeli officials and meets with the Palestinian prime minister. Mindful of polls back home that show a tight presidential contest, the former one-term governor is looking to burnish his foreign policy credentials and prove his mettle as a possible commander in chief. The trip is a chance for Romney to draw implicit contrasts with Obama and demonstrate how he would lead America on the world stage.

But Romney arrived in Jerusalem Saturday night after a difficult few days in Britain, where he made the mistake of criticizing the country's Olympic Games and raised the hackles of his hosts. The gaffe undermined the stated goal of his weeklong journey through Britain, Israel and Poland: emphasizing America's ties with longstanding allies.

"In a time of turmoil and peril in Israel's neighborhood, it is important that the security of America's commitments to Israel will be as clear as humanly possible. When Israel feels less secure in the neighborhood, it should feel more secure of the commitment of the United States to its defense," Romney said in a Friday interview with the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz.

What he's not doing: Specifically outlining how a Romney presidency would approach Iran's nuclear program, the escalating civil war in Syria, and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process differently from Obama. As Romney visits, Israel's leaders are weighing a military attack on Iran, warily watching the shaky regime in neighboring Syria and Mideast peace talks are going nowhere.

Romney has pledged not to criticize Obama while on foreign soil, honoring longstanding American tradition of leaving politics at the water's edge. In London on Thursday, he said he also didn't think it appropriate to discuss foreign policy while overseas.

In interviews with Israeli newspapers ahead of his arrival, Romney has both criticized Obama and commented more extensively on policy details.

"Iran is closer to nuclearization than it was when President Obama took office. It is hard to feel that the events of the last three and a half years have strengthened America's posture and promoted the prospects of peace," Romney told Hayom, a conservative Israeli publication bankrolled by billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson. Romney was still in the U.S. when he spoke to the paper, though his remarks weren't published until Friday, when he was already abroad.

In the interview with Ha'aretz, Romney urged caution in supporting rebel forces in Syria. He's previously said the U.S. should do more to arm the opposition there, but reports this week say Islamist terror groups could now be an element of rebel forces, prompting caution from U.S. officials.

"I think it is important for the responsible nations of the world to seek to understand which forces in Syria represent real change, rather than the kind of destruction that might occur if al-Qaeda were to seize the development of chaos and assert leadership in some significant way in Syria," Romney said Friday.

Romney will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a host of Israeli security officials. He'll also meet with Israeli President Shimon Peres and the leaders of Israel's political opposition. Romney will also hold a meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, though his advisers say he didn't have time to meet with Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas.

He'll also deliver a speech in Jerusalem, where advisers say he will "lock arms" with Israel. Romney doesn't plan to outline specific policies in the address, which he'll make outdoors near the historic Old City.

Romney plans to spend the evening dining at Netanyahu's home ? the Israeli leader invited Romney and his wife to break the fast for the Jewish holiday Tisha B'Av. The holy day, celebrated Sunday, commemorates the destruction of two temples in Jerusalem. Romney and Netanyahu have known each other since both were young businessmen at Boston Consulting Group in the 1970s.

On Monday, Romney plans a fundraiser with top American supporters in Israel, some guests have flown in from the U.S. specifically for the event. His campaign has barred reporters from covering his comments to the 50 or so wealthy backers who will gather at the luxurious King David Hotel ? all of whom will have donated $50,000 or raised at least $100,000. Keeping the remarks private is a change from how Romney handles fundraisers in the United States, where a group of reporters are allowed into events held in public spaces like hotels.

Expected among the attendees is Adelson, who has pledged to spend $100 million to defeat Obama and who has given millions to a third-party group supporting Romney's presidency.

While Romney is left to implicit contrasts with his Democratic opponent, Obama has been focusing on Israel, signing legislation on Friday increasing military and civilian ties between the U.S. and Israel. And he authorized the release of an additional $70 million in military aid for Israel, a previously announced move that appeared timed to Romney's trip.

BKC Personal and Group Fitness Training: Mind, Body & Spirit

Mind, Body & Spirit

"If there is right in the Soul,
There will be beauty in the person.
If there is beauty in the person,
There will be harmony in the home.
If there is harmony in the home,
There will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation,
There will be peace in the world." ? Lao Tze

?Fundamentally, the word ?health? comes from the root word ?whole? (?Yoga Energy: Mind Body Spirit ? Sadhguru ?Huffpost Healthy Living?).? However, many of us from Western society only think in terms of our body when it comes to our health and fitness; being healthy means we are disease free and being fit means that we exercise our bodies to build strong muscles and healthy lungs.??? But if we do go back to the root of the word ?health? our medical health alone does not give us a sense of ?wholeness.?? The term ?whole? takes into account our entire being.? If we are to take the concept of ?health? meaning ?whole? how can we not talk about our sense of wellness from within?
There have been many philosophers and scientists who have supported dualistic theories when it comes to mind and body.? According to 17th century French philosopher Rene Descartes ?I think, therefore I am;? Descartes wrote a thesis on mind-body dualism that established that he had a mind without needing to assume he had a body ? ?I understand the mind to be indivisible by its very nature, I understand the body to be divisible by its very nature, therefore, the mind is completely different from the body.?? A lot of western medicine seems to support Descartes theory of the body being a separate entity to the mind; ailments are physically and scientifically diagnosed and then symptoms are chemically or surgically treated.? Emotion is not recognized as a cause or a cure.
I think it is the eastern influence on our culture and developed theories on emotional intelligence and health that have influenced our culture and brought us round to the concept of ?body-mind.? ?This more unified concept argues that the body, mind, emotions and spirit are dynamically interrelated; each time a change is introduced at one level ?it has a ripple effect throughout the entire system? (Wikipedia).? The belief of Body-mind theorists is that the body holds all experiences ? both physical stress and emotional injury ? so specific postural positions or muscle tension can bring back memories and emotions.? Body-mind therapy combines the strengths of ?talk? therapy with body work, such as touch, postural alignment or movement education and exercise to increase body awareness, also known as mind-body or somatic therapy.? This therapy helps people become deeply aware of their bodily sensations as well as their emotions, images and behaviour.? Patients become more conscious of how they breathe, move, speak and where they experience feelings in their bodies (Wikipedia).? Suddenly there is a blur in the lines dividing mind and body.
In Yoga, when the term ?health? is used, it isn?t in terms of either the body or the mind; it is only in terms of energy (Yoga Energy: Mind Body Spirit ? Sadhguru ?Huffpost Healthy Living?).? In yoga, if your energy body is in proper balance and in full flow, your physical body and mental body will be in perfect health.? Now the spirit governs our very health!
When we refer to our ?well-being? we are usually talking in terms of finding balance and nourishing all aspects of our life; our physical health through exercise and proper eating, our emotional health, finding success or a sense of importance through our occupation, a spiritual connection to our universe, being social and being connected to those around us, nurturing our intellect by gaining further knowledge of ourselves and our surroundings.? If this is true, there are many un-well beings among us.? As a fitness professional, I keep hearing about how time poor everyone is? people can?t spend time on their physical fitness because their work schedule is too hectic, some people sacrifice their physical fitness or their career due to overwhelming family commitments, there are people who train their body all the time but then over-stimulate it with supplements and pollute their bodies rather than nourish it through good nutrition? and then they are unwilling to enhance their education on the matter- or any other matter- because their time is so consumed with their obsessions and then the intellect becomes starved and once again the balance lost!? Many of us lose sight of our ?whole? health and well-being because we overindulge in one aspect of our life.
Fatigue is often a state recognised but never alleviated.? Many of us soldier on and endure the tired dragging of our feet and bodies.? Often there is admiration when we do this.? What we don?t stop to realise is that fatigue often comes when we overindulge in one aspect of our life and don?t nurture another.? If we are fatigued are we happy?? If we draw away from the centre of our well-being and focus on only select-criteria of what makes us whole, will we ever be satisfied with ourselves?? We compromise and neglect our energy constantly.
?? ??Health and wellness are defined as being diseased free and having a functioning body.? What if the rest of our life is dysfunctional???? Are we well when we are fit to run a marathon but have no one in our lives to connect to?? Are we happy when our careers soar but feel like we are susceptible to a coronary when we climb a flight of stairs?? Is contentment found when we have the family of our dreams but our hunger for knowledge or our desire for career have been denied?? And if the wellness from within is not at a state we deem healthy, will our bodies just stand up and function as if this doesn?t matter???
So where do we focus our attention?? If we neglect our bodies we do run the risk of experiencing bad health and possibly disease? our body is our temple and should not be neglected.? There is much evidence that shows that neglecting our mind and our emotions can lead to poor health.? This once again puts our body, our physical and scientifically proven entity of who we are and what we represent, at risk? so our thoughts and feelings aren?t necessarily invisible? ?I personally like the yogi philosophy of attending to our spiritual energy.? Yoga uses physical movement and mind connection to align our energy and bring it to a state of flow? and yet I can still see these three aspects of us ? our mind, body and spirit- blurred boundaries and each aspect weaving through one another so that they interlock and make us whole again.? ???

Importance of Payment Gateway Integration with Ecommerce

Payment Gateway generally refers to an e-commerce service that authorizes payments for e-businesses & online retailers. In a way, it symbolizes a physical POS (Point-of-sale) terminal located at most retail outlets. Payment gateways are essential to encrypt sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, to guarantee that information passes securely between the customer and the merchant. web application development ? this helps to create payment integration services

Advantages of Payment gateway Integrations

  • Gateways provide important benefits if you have more than a few orders per day
  • Useful in credit card validation in real time
  • Helps the business to go online & be accessible to users worldwide 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
  • Money is usually deposited into your bank account automatically
  • Reports and refunds usually allowed via browser by gateway company

Integrated payment gateway brings with it flawless and the most easy going payment method due to which it is creating a revolution.

Suitable to all business types and to those who are in need to have their ecommerce website built in less than an hour, ecommerce solution providers can help get it made for clients by means of URL insertion and also offer with ready made shopping carts pre-integrated with 50 major payment gateways along with the recommended Link Point payment gateway thereby providing ecommerce solution that guarantees simple checkout. Ecommerce solution website can just incorporate the shopping cart and can get going with payment gateway ecommerce solution from Link Points and other service providers like Verysign, Authorize.net, and PayPal etc.

The next foremost feature which is important with regard to payments made is to get optimum security and many prefer PayPal which is the most extensively used and trusted payment system for online businesses to take orders through, credit left and via debit card or bank account through the PayPal website. PayPal payment system has an easy to use interface for the online shopping cart software. If you want to sell products on your site, you'll need to be able to offer a means of taking orders and payment from your customers. One of the easiest and most accessible ways of doing this is by using PayPal. If you have your own URL then it can be integrated with the exceptional shopping cart along with integrated payment gateway ecommerce solution from Link Points and web development company in chennai providers authorization with Verysign, Authorize.net, and PayPal etc.

PayPal site. In this way, both the consumer and the merchant can have money dealings through the online shopping cart having PayPal as one of its gateway.

Two Kinds of Payment Gateway

There are basically two kinds of payment gateways. One needs a merchant account. The other does not need any merchant account.

Payment Gateway that requires Merchant Account

Basically, you need to apply for a merchant account at your local bank or at any third party company?s that provide this service. Then and only then can you benefit of this payment gateway service.

Payment Gateway that does not requires Merchant Account

As we?ve seen in the above discussion, let?s assume that you are an part-time photographer who wants to sell digital photos online. Payment gateways which do not require merchant account has some diverse advantages in this case.

Dead Trigger teases new weapons

Android Central

New weapons are on the way to Dead Trigger, the zombie gore-fest launched by Mad Finger Games a few weeks ago. The teaser trailer for update 1.1.0 includes a chainsaw, some kind of lawn/face mower, a lever-action shotgun, and a WWI-era machine gun. Best of all, there are going to be zombies wearing body armor - you can expect that they'll be tough to kill the second go-around. There are a few other nice little gems nestled in the feature list.

  • experience personally four new savage weapons (including two melees): Chain Saw, Lewis Heavy Machine Gun, Marine Engine with sharp-edged blades and Repeating rifle, a classic of the American West
  • enjoy the new funny and handy gadget -- the Head-Flator X100 enables to inflate the heads of zombies to XXL size and... Headshot!
  • meet new zombie creatures -- mutated mobsters or armoured SWAT members
  • explore new fantastic environments -- underground car park or secret research base institute
  • try out new gadgets or get more money - reveal deadly survival arena, that is tailor-made for massacre of hordes of zombies
  • visit Casino and try your luck with a slot machine
  • and finally safe game data with cross platform cloud backup
  • This huge update brings Dead Trigger also to Adreno 205, including Sony Xperia Play!

I'm pretty excited about new Dead Trigger content since a lot of the time Mad Finger's titles feel more like tech demos than games. Dead Trigger in particular is a little pushy with the in-app purchases, but on the whole, it's just some great, solid zombie-killing. Besides, it's hard to go wrong for a buck. How much time have you pumped into the game? Which of the new Dead Trigger weapons are you itching to try out?

Why did Neanderthals have such humongous right arms?

An analysis of Neanderthal bones indicates that they had disproportionately huge biceps and triceps on their right arms, and that spear thrusting does not seem to fully account for their lopsided muscles.?

By Charles Q. Choi,?LiveScience / July 19, 2012

A volunteer performs a spear-thrusting task like a Neanderthal would as electrodes monitor his muscle activity.

The unusually powerful right arms of Neanderthals may not be due to a spear-hunting life as once suggested, but rather one often spent scraping animal skins for clothes and shelters, researchers say.

The Neanderthals are our closest known extinct relatives, who were probably less brutish and more like modern humans than commonly portrayed. Their brains were at least as large as ours. They controlled fire, expertly made stone tools, were proficient hunters, lived in complex social groups, buried their dead, and perhaps artfully wore feathers. Genetic research even suggests they interbred with modern humans.

Neanderthals apparently had unusually strong right arms, judging by their right humerus ? the long arm bone underlying the biceps and triceps ? which often boasted protrusions with which to attach powerful muscles.

"Neanderthals have really interesting upper bodies," researcher Colin Shaw, a biological anthropologist at the University of Cambridge in England, told LiveScience. "If you and I are both right-handed, you'd expect 4 to 13 percent asymmetry between our arms. Neanderthals have up to 50 percent or more asymmetry. They were doing something with their dominant arms that were either more intense or repetitive or both than we do today. The only population of modern people that we see who are similar are tennis players, who hit tennis balls many, many years aggressively." [Top 10 Mysteries of the First Humans]

Scientists had suggested these arms may have grown strong through regular underhanded spear-thrusting. "We thought to test that idea," Shaw said.

Shaw, along with colleagues at Pennsylvania State University and the University of Oxford, took measured electrical activity in the muscles of 13 right-handed men as they performed three different spear-thrusting tasks ? single thrusts followed by rapid withdrawals, repeated strikes, and strikes followed by pushing of the spear forward. They also analyzed the men as they carried out four different scraping tasks on carpets ? hacking, pushing and two kinds of pulling.

The experiments were done on men because most Neanderthal skeletons analyzed by scientists have been male. Female skeletons do show the asymmetry, but the small number of specimens makes it tough to say for sure whether Neanderthal females had uneven arms, too.

The researchers found that spear-thrusting led to significantly higher muscle activity on the left side of the body than on the right, opposite to what is seen in Neanderthal fossils.

"Spear-thrusting did not appear to explain the mystery," Shaw said.

Famine anniversary: Somalis dying on food walks

(AP) ? The long, dusty walks from hungry homes to far-away refugee camps are again claiming lives in Somalia one year after an estimated 100,000 people died in the country's worst famine in generations.

Two lethal factors are again combining to send families fleeing from south-central Somalia: Too little rain and too many guns.

In a cruel replay of last year's long walks, many families who left refugee camps to go home earlier this year as the crisis eased and attempted to plant food are now forced to return to the camps where they will live in stick huts covered by scraps of cloth.

Some 12 million people needed assistance at the height of last year's famine. This year the U.N. says 2.5 million people are in crisis and in need of aid to survive.

Primordial Pinwheel: Astronomers Spot Oldest Prominent Spiral Galaxy Yet

News | Space

Three billion years after the big bang most galaxies were clumpy and odd-shaped, but at least one had already assumed a familiar form, and may elucidate how modern galaxies got their shapes

Spiral galaxy at z = 2.18, in the early universeSHAPELY SPIRAL: A composite false-color image from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Keck telescope in Hawaii shows BX 442's spiral structure. The companion galaxy that may be responsible for BX 442's spiral shape is visible to the upper left. Image: David Law; Dunlap Insitute for Astronomy & Astrophysics

The early universe was a rough-and-tumble place. Galaxies smashed together with much more regularity than they do today, and the insides of galaxies were chaotic, clumpy pods of stars. It was no place for an orderly, delicate swirl of a galaxy like the Milky Way or Andromeda.

But by scanning hundreds of galaxies that existed just a few billion years after the big bang, a group of astronomers has turned up a diamond in the cosmic rough. The researchers found a rare early galaxy with pronounced spiral arms, they reported in the July 19 issue of Nature. And that galaxy's unique circumstances may help explain why spirals are so rare at that epoch. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

The newfound galaxy, known as BX 442, was identified as a spiral in Hubble images targeting 306 galaxies at redshifts of 1.5 to 3.6, corresponding to times roughly 9.3 billion to 11.9 billion years ago. (Redshift is a measure of cosmological distance that indicates how much an object's light has been stretched toward longer wavelengths as it traverses an expanding universe.) BX 442, the only identifiable spiral of the bunch, resides at redshift 2.18, some 10.7 billion years ago, or just three billion years after the big bang. It appears to fit the bill for a variety called a grand-design spiral, in which pronounced spiral arms lend a well-defined shape to the galaxy's disk of stars.

"We see the grand-design spiral pattern in this galaxy, and it's kind of astounding. We hadn't expected to find that," says lead study author David Law, an astrophysicist at the University of Toronto. "The 300-odd other galaxies in our own survey, and many others in different surveys, don't show this pattern."

Spirals are common in the modern universe, but as astronomers gaze across the cosmos at objects farther and farther away?and hence further and further back in time?spiral structure starts to peter out, which is why BX 442 makes for such an interesting case study.

"It is unique, they're right about that," says astronomer Bruce Elmegreen of IBM's T. J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, N.Y. "It's been known for awhile that there are disks at these redshifts. Disks are not surprising, and usually when there are disks locally there are spirals in the disks," he adds. "But at these redshifts spirals have not been seen, and that had been a puzzle."

Instead of orderly swirls, astronomers see lumpy, blobby galaxies going through the cosmic equivalent of an awkward phase. "At these redshifts, the galaxy population if you look with Hubble mostly looks irregular and peculiar," says astrophysicist Christopher Conselice of the University of Nottingham. "Most of those galaxies are probably undergoing mergers, smashing together." And their stars are not usually confined to a flat, thin, evenly rotating disk.

BX 442, too, appears to have a somewhat chaotic stellar population, as if it its contents have been churned up. But somehow a regular spiral structure was imprinted on the galaxy's stars, perhaps by a recent grazing encounter with a much smaller galaxy. "What seems to set it apart as best as we can tell is it has this little companion galaxy off to the side," Law says of the rare spiral.

A study last year showed that the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy, a satellite of the Milky Way, could be responsible for some of the spiral structure of our own galaxy. As Sagittarius fell inward and passed through the plane of the larger galaxy, its impact would have been strong enough to disrupt a uniform disk of stars and morph it into a familiar spiral. A similar process could explain the atypical spiral nature of BX 442. Using a computer simulation, the researchers found that an interaction could indeed stir up spiral structure in the distant galaxy. But that transformation would not be permanent if indeed the companion galaxy were the trigger. "If that's the case, then what we're seeing now will probably fade away within about 100 million years or so," Law says.

Insurance Specialists Want Wildfire Victims To Be On Alert ? CBS ...

Rubble is all that remains of this home after the Waldo Canyon Fire in Colorado Springs. (credit: CBS)

DENVER (CBS4) ? This year has been the costliest wildfire season in Colorado history, and insurance specialists want victims to be on alert for people who want to take advantage of them.

Those who are dealing with trying to put their lives back together after surviving a wildfire or other natural disaster are now having to deal with the possibility of being victimized again.

Even though a home may have been damaged by a wildfire or even severe weather, the good news is at least most have homeowners insurance to help replace some of what they?ve lost. However, after all the headlines, professional crooks are on the prowl in damaged neighborhoods offering what looks like help, but people need to beware ? many will only cause more headaches.

Some tips for selecting a reputable contractor are as follows:

? Get more than one estimate. Don?t be pushed into signing a contract right away. If they?re reputable they won?t mind waiting.

? Get everything in writing. Cost, work to be done, materials, time schedule, guarantees, payment schedule and other expectations should be detailed.

? Demand references and check them out.

? Ask to see the salesperson?s driver?s license and write down the license number and license plate number.

? Ask for proof that the contractor is bonded, carries liability insurance, and covers his/her workers with workers compensation insurance.

? Make sure that the contractor?s business card has a verifiable street address and office phone number. Never sign a contract with blanks.

? Don?t ever pay upfront.

If you believe you have been approached by an unlicensed contractor or adjuster, or have been encouraged to fabricate an insurance claim, contact your insurance company or call the National Insurance Crime Bureau Hotline at 1-800-TEL-NICB (1-800-835-6422).
